At just 33, Edward Bluemel is officially the youngest live-action actor ever to play Hercule Poirot, and the BBC has handed him the moustache. The prequel series, titled Hercule, is headed to BBC One and BritBox, and Agatha Christie fans are already paying very close attention. One of fiction's most beloved detectives is about to get a considerably younger, and considerably more intriguing origin story.
While the youngest Poirot yet is confirmed, the world Hercule is building around him is worth paying equal attention to.

At 33, Edward Bluemel is officially the youngest live-action actor ever to play Hercule Poirot. The new BBC and BritBox series, titled Hercule, is a six-part prequel tracking Poirot's earliest cases in London during the interwar period. It charts his growing friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings, early run-ins with Scotland Yard's James Japp, and the arrival of a new nemesis.
"I feel very lucky to have been trusted with such an iconic character who has been played by so many great actors," Bluemel stated in the Hercule press release.
He then added, "I can't wait to continue Hercule's legacy," a sentiment that perfectly captures both the thrill and the weight of stepping into such storied shoes.
Bluemel joins a remarkably distinguished line of actors who have taken on Poirot's waxed moustache and meticulous manner. David Suchet remains the gold standard, having played the role across 70 episodes over 25 years on ITV. Albert Finney brought commanding intensity to the 1974 film M***** on the Orient Express, earning an Oscar nomination in the process. Peter Ustinov charmed audiences across multiple big-screen outings from 1978 to 1988, while Kenneth Branagh tackled three modern theatrical films between 2017 and 2023.
While Bluemel inherits one of fiction's most legendary roles, his own Agatha Christie history runs deeper than most fans might realise.
Agatha Christie adaptations in Hercule and beyond
Before landing the role of Hercule Poirot, Edward Bluemel was part of the cast of Netflix's The Seven Dials, playing the charming Jimmy Thesiger opposite Mia McKenna-Bruce in the three-part Agatha Christie adaptation that premiered in January 2026. Christie's universe on screen is clearly expanding rapidly. BritBox is also set to debut Tommy and Tuppence, a six-part contemporary adaptation starring Antonia Thomas, Josh Dylan, and Imelda Staunton, arriving September 15th.

Filming on Hercule begins this summer, primarily in Liverpool, with writer Benji Walters and director Jonny Campbell helming the project. The series adapts three of Christie's celebrated stories while building Poirot's origin as both a detective and a man. With over 750 million Poirot novels sold worldwide, the pressure is real, and Edward Bluemel, notably, seems ready for every last clue.
