The American Film Institute (AFI) bestows the esteemed AFI Life Achievement Award on people whose lifetime achievements in film and television have enhanced American culture. The prize, which was established in 1973, honors people who have significantly improved the craft of filmmaking and whose accomplishments have been recognized by academics, critics, and the public.

In short, the award celebrates the lifetime’s worth of work of distinguished individuals belonging to the film industry. Promoting the moving picture as an art form is the mission of the American Film Institute, which is a nonprofit organization. This is why the 51st AFI Life Achievement Award Tribute Gala's whole revenues will go toward funding AFI's artistic and educational programs.

Talking about the previous recipients, Oscar winners Francis Ford Coppola (2025), Nicole Kidman (2024), Julie Andrews (2022), and Denzel Washington (2019) are the four most recent recipients of the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. George Clooney was chosen as the 46th honoree in 2018, whereas Actress Diane Keaton in 2017 and composer John Williams in 2016 came before him.
