For over a decade, the business of Hollywood was simple: The Rock plus an action adventure script equals millions in profit. If producers could put Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on a poster, they were guaranteed a global hit. He was not just an actor; he was a brand in himself who could sell tickets like no one else. However, the 2026 box office landscape tells a different story. As we look at his recent track record, the bulletproof nature of his brand has begun to crack.

Here is the box office analysis of his last 5 movies, which might help in determining whether his stature as the highest-paid actor is still justified.

The Smashing Machine (2025)

Perhaps the most crucial project in his recent filmography, The Smashing Machine (an A24 drama), was somewhat a step out of his comfort zone. The film did not just require his jacked physique but also some emotional heavy-lifting which the actor excelled at as the movie was praised by the critics specially for Johnson’s performance in it. However, the prestige pivot and a solid acting performance could not convert into that classical Dwayne Johnson pull that filled the theaters.

Given that the movie had a $50 million budget, its $6 million opening weekend was difficult to digest. Even though A24 usually does not produce films with widespread box office appeal, it was quite disappointing that the movie featuring Johnson failed to break even with a lifetime total of $21.1 million.

Red One (2024)

Red One was an attempt from the Jumanji actor to prove he could still anchor a massive-budget, high-concept original blockbuster. Featuring Dawayne Johnson alongside heavy-hitters like Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons, the movie promised to be the biggest holiday entertainer of the year.

Despite a holiday release window and a massive marketing push, the box office returns were lukewarm relative to the film's bloated budget. The movie could only muster a $186 million compared to the enormous $200-$250 million budget. It demonstrated the disconnect between "A-List star" billing and "must-see" theatrical demand.

Moana 2 (2024)

Moana 2 proved to be the outlier that proves the rule. As Maui, Dwayne Johnson was undeniably iconic. Moana 2 was a massive global smash, proving that his voice-acting appeal remains untouchable. The animated film emerged as a box-office juggernaut, grossing over $1 billion on a budget of $150 million, an extraordinary return.

The movie is just his second biggest career hit only surpassed by Furious 7 ($1.5 billion). However, this success is tied to the brand of Disney animation rather than his star power as a live-action draw. It shows that he is arguably more powerful as an animated icon than a live-action lead.

Fast X (2023)

Dwayne Johnson's comeback to the Fast movies was an attempt to revive waning franchise interest, even though it was technically mostly revolving around Vin Diesel. A mixed bag performance was the outcome. Despite amassing $714 million worldwide, the box office did not qualify as a clear win due to a bloated budget reaching $340 million.

It demonstrated that even Johnson's most dependable home - the Fast universe - is no longer a surefire billion-dollar vault, even though he is still a draw. His participation here demonstrates the difficulty of staying relevant in long-running, well-established IPs.

Black Adam (2022)

Black Adam, which was marketed as the movie that would change the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe, turned out to be the most obvious sign of a changing audience. It failed to develop the planned franchise and struggled to make a profit. The film collected $393.5 million worldwide against an unverified production budget ranging from $190-$260 million before marketing costs. It demonstrated that in the modern era, a star-driven production cannot force box office success without a solid, pre-existing fan following or a coherent artistic vision.

With only one movie out of five being a clear winner, it might be somewhat clear as to where Dwayne Johnson stands in this whole debate. The star is clearly losing his draw as the big action star and somewhere he must have also realized that. Hence came the surprising pivot to more serious films like The Smashing Machine. Now, all eyes are fixed on his upcoming live-action adaptation of Moana. A success with this particular outing will mean he still got it as a live-action star.
