Dwayne Johnson talks about Jumanji the way most people talk about comfort food: warm, generous, and slightly addictive. He praises Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan like a man permanently seated in the best seat of a theatre, laughing at every perfectly timed punchline. He carries the memory of Robin Williams gently, even wearing a dice necklace as if it might keep the film’s spirit from wandering off. It is action, comedy, and chosen family all stitched together.
However, during one Jumanji press tour, Johnson’s enthusiasm took a back seat when a frightening cancer scare briefly shifted his focus away from the franchise.

Dwayne Johnson revealed in an interview with Esquire magazine that a cancer scare unfolded during his Jumanji press tour, turning a promotional whirlwind into something far more personal. What should have been a routine run with Kevin Hart and Jack Black became overshadowed by medical uncertainty. Even the Mojave sky felt less cinematic when the news first surfaced.
He described how the concern arrived suddenly, after he noticed a painful lump while showering at home. A doctor’s initial assessment suggested inflammation, but cancer could not be ruled out immediately. Between filming obligations and a packed Jumanji schedule, Johnson found himself quietly carrying a private fear while maintaining public energy alongside his co-stars.
“So I had to live with that for those twenty-four hours, not knowing—and I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches,” Johnson said. In the end, the ultrasound brought relief, confirming the scare was not cancer. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson later reflected on how quickly life shifted between fear and routine, noting that even a franchise filled with chaos and comedy like Jumanji could not match real-life tension.
Thankfully, Dwayne Johnson is doing well, as fans simply cannot imagine these roles being reprised by anyone else, which is quite the opposite sentiment at the thought of Johnson joining the MCU as Apocalypse.
Roles that can only be reprised by Dwayne Johnson
While studios can technically recast any role, certain characters feel so tightly fused with Dwayne Johnson’s physical presence, charisma, and public persona that replacing him would feel like rewriting the audience’s memory. His blend of pro-wrestling intensity, comic timing, and larger-than-life stature has shaped roles that do not simply fit an actor but seem built around him.
Luke Hobbs from the Fast & Furious franchise stands as a prime example, designed as a muscular counterforce to Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto, relying heavily on Johnson’s real-world bravado and humor. Maui from Moana carries his voice, physical inspiration, and even cultural influence, making the character inseparable from him. Dr. Smolder Bravestone from the Jumanji sequels pushes the joke further, turning his physique into part of the narrative itself.

From Black Adam to Ray Gaines in San Andreas, these characters lean on his extreme physicality and screen dominance to sell their worlds convincingly. Even The Scorpion King remains tied to his breakout image as a Hollywood action force, making recasting feel like replacing the blueprint itself. Ultimately, these roles endure as proof that some characters are so deeply associated with Dwayne Johnson that audiences would rather see no version at all than a different one.
