Donnie Wahlberg Is Dream-Casting Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for ‘Boston Blue’
Boston’s own screen warrior, Donnie Wahlberg, has already helped turn Boston Blue into one of CBS’s hottest new victories, pulling nearly 8 million viewers an episode and storming into more than 100 global markets. As television wages a ruthless war for ratings, relevance, and staying power, few freshman dramas now burn brighter than the Blue Bloods spinoff that relocated Danny Reagan to a brand-new Boston battlefield. And now, with an early season two renewal already fueling the rise, Wahlberg seems ready to ignite an even louder frenzy by calling on two of the city’s most iconic names, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
And if his dream casting ever becomes reality, Boston Blue may not just own Friday nights; it could seize the whole city spotlight.

During Wednesday’s episode on April 23rd of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Donnie Wahlberg publicly pitched Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for Boston Blue, making clear he wants more hometown fire inside the hit drama. He also floated the idea of bringing in Mark Wahlberg, while joking that his brother has no desire to act with him. With both stars deeply tied to Boston and forever linked through Good Will Hunting, Wahlberg sees them as natural fits for the city-rooted series. And while their packed schedules could complicate any move, his public push signals real interest from the show’s side, leaving fans watching closely for whether this dream casting can become reality.
“I’d like to get some other Boston guys in it. Let’s see, Mark Wahlberg, maybe? I don’t know. He don’t want to act with me.” Wahlberg told Fallon.
And that rising momentum is no accident, as Boston Blue has quickly grown into a major new force for CBS since its October 2025 debut. Averaging around 8 million viewers per episode in Nielsen Live+7 ratings, surging 87% in streaming on Paramount+ from the same slot last year, and already crowned the network’s No. 1 new series, the Blue Bloods spinoff earned an early renewal while holding the franchise’s iconic Friday 10 PM throne. And with Wahlberg leading the charge as Danny Reagan, the arrival of hometown giants like Affleck or Damon could send the Boston phenomenon into an even louder stratosphere.
And while all eyes now remain fixed on dream guest-cast buzz, both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck already appear tied to packed 2026 slates that may keep the city call waiting a little longer.
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s packed 2026 projects may delay the Boston Blue dream
Between fronting giant studio projects and steering their rapidly expanding banner Artists Equity, both Ben Affleck and Matt Damon appear to be carrying schedules heavy enough to complicate any sudden detour to Boston Blue. The duo already opened 2026 with The Rip, a gritty Netflix crime thriller, while Animals is also lined up with Affleck directing, co-writing, and starring as Damon backs the project as producer. Meanwhile, Damon’s biggest mountain this year remains The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s reported $250 million epic, where he leads as Odysseus ahead of its July 17, 2026 release after a demanding global shoot.

The Rip reportedly erupted with 41.6 million views in its first three days and held the global No. 1 spot on Netflix for weeks, proving why Affleck and Damon are still an unbeatable duo. Add in Artists Equity’s new Netflix first-look deal and expanding creative ventures, and the Boston dream now seems to be fighting a calendar as much as a casting call.
However, whether Wahlberg’s wish to bring his fellow Boston guys into becomes reality or stays a dream list for now, fans can still enjoy the magnetic Affleck-Damon duo in The Rip on Netflix.
