In a 2025 interview with Youngstown Studio, Donald Gibb revealed that he almost lost the role of Ogre because casting executives believed he looked too old to play a college student. According to the actor, stunt coordinator Terry James stepped in to help after director Jeff Kanew continued pushing for Gibb to stay in contention for the role.

“So, I all of a sudden, I get a call from my buddy and he says, ‘If you can get down here, shaved, you know — get down here as fast as you can,” Gibb told Youngstown Studio in 2025 in an interview. As such, Gibb told the outlet, he had shaved, but he also had “blood squirting out” of his face from close cuts and pieces of toilet paper to cover them up.

After cleaning himself up, Gibb returned for another meeting clean-shaven and ultimately convinced the filmmakers he could pull off the college-aged character. The gamble paid off, with Ogre eventually becoming one of the defining comedic characters of the decade. The role not only launched Gibb into cult-movie fame but also remained the performance most closely associated with his career for decades afterward.
