Dolph Lundgren was not impressed with the cameo pitch for him in Masters of the Universe. And that hesitation may have led to one of the film’s most meaningful moments. It was not surprising that Lundgren, who famously played He-Man in the 1987 film Masters of the Universe, made a cameo appearance in the 2026 reboot film.

As memorable as the cameo is, the story behind it is even more interesting. The crucial scene audiences saw on screen came to happen after Lundgren pushed back on the original idea.

During an interview with Men’s Journal, Dolph Lundgren revealed that he did not like director Travis Knight’s original cameo pitch for him in Masters of the Universe and shared his own new idea after getting inspiration from the script. And the director embraced the suggestion to write a new cameo role for him. While the scene was hilarious, it was also crucial in Nicholas Galitzine’s journey as He-Man in the film.

"I thought about it and when I read the script, I remember at the end, there's a quote at the end of the script about finding your inner power and being who you can really be, to be yourself. I thought, 'That would be nice if I could deliver that message to Nicholas,’” he said.

"It was a bit emotional. I really enjoyed it,” he further added.

Lundgren spoke fondly about the cameo he shares with Nicholas Galitzine. As it turns out, the Purple Hearts star had also been hoping for the original He-Man to make an appearance in the new film. Galitzine hilariously recalled that by the time he finally pitched the idea to director Travis Knight, production was already underway, and the team was already in talks to bring Lundgren aboard. In the end, it felt fitting that the original He-Man would be the one to pass the torch to Galitzine.

The moment not only added emotional weight to the film but also became a memorable and meaningful moment for Galitzine's character, Adam.

As Dolph Lundgren explained in his interview with Men's Journal, his idea was for a conversation between him and Nicholas Galitzine, where he could pass on some wisdom, almost like handing over the Sword of Power. The cameo scene features Adam working in a gym before his journey back to Eternia, where he meets Lundgren’s character, who tells him that he is in his spot. The moment is especially hilarious considering Galitzine has quite literally stepped into Lundgren’s shoes as the new He-Man.

The scene further shows Lundgren sharing a few words of advice with Galitzine’s character, which is to stay true to himself. That advice was ultimately valuable for Adam when he led the Eternian troops against Skeletor. At the end of the scene, Lundgren also says, “Good journey,” which is taken from the 1987 film. So, safe to say, Lundgren’s revised idea, combined with director Travis Knight’s unique approach to the role, worked incredibly well for the characters, moment and the fil.
