Ryan Coogler was one of the strongest contenders to win the Best Director award at the Oscars for Sinners. He could have made him the first Black director to take home the honor. Despite the historic possibility, Coogler has made it clear that his motivation for creating films comes from a much deeper place.

“My award is the opportunity to have this job. The opportunity to go write a script, get a crew together, hire union jobs, contribute to people’s health care, insurance, and their families,” he said. “The fact that I have this job and continue to have it is the greatest gift,” he added.

He is not concerned with numbers or statistics, as his greatest reward is simply the opportunity to do what he loves and contribute to society through his work. That speaks volumes about the values he stands by. Even if he did not win the Best Director honor, it is safe to say that Coogler is already a winner among the many people who admire and appreciate his work.
