Doctor Who’s Christmas special has been cancelled, marking a huge departure from one of the show’s most beloved traditions. The BBC has reportedly put the long-running sci-fi series out to tender to attract new investment and support its long-term future. The move has allegedly raised concern, with the festive episodes becoming a staple of the franchise's holiday schedule over the years.
As per BBC, the corporation said last year there would be a festive special in 2026, but it recently confirmed that it will not be happening. Instead, the broadcaster is asking production companies to come forward to help co-produce the next series. Showrunner Russell T Davies also confirmed he will leave the program.
"As part of securing the next phase of the show for future generations, and in line with the BBC’s Charter and Agreement requirements, the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year," the statement read, as per BBC.
As Christmas special faces an uncertain future, the adventures of the Doctor remain at the heart of one of television's longest-running franchises.
Doctor Who plot explained: The Doctor's adventures through time and space
Doctor Who is about the adventures of the Doctor, a mysterious alien Time Lord who travels through time and space in a ship known as the TARDIS. The TARDIS seems to be an ordinary police box in terms of exterior, though is way more spacious inside and can get the Doctor literally anywhere across the universe. In addition, the Doctor has companions who accompany him in his travels, helping him to deal with the difficulties he faces.
During the series, he comes across various threats, be it an aliens invasion or some terrible monsters, or just moral questions he needs to solve. One of the main features of the show that attracts viewers is the presence of legendary villains like Daleks, Cybermen, and the Master. Each episode unites elements of science fiction, action, suspense, and drama at a specific period of time in another world.
