Disney has never truly stopped chasing the magic of turning animation into live action. Even after recent highs and lows at the box office, the studio continues to treat its animated vault like an ever-expanding cinematic universe rather than a museum piece. While Moana struggled to recreate the tidal wave made by its animated predecessor, Disney appears determined to refine the formula instead of abandoning it.

The bayou is calling once again, but this time the path looks far less familiar.

Disney has officially tapped Emmy winner and Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo to co-write a live-action project inspired by The Princess and the Frog, according to Deadline. Rather than producing a scene-by-scene recreation of the 2009 animated classic, the studio is reportedly developing an original story that draws inspiration from the film. Domingo is writing alongside acclaimed playwright and Tony Award-nominated director Robert O'Hara, a collaboration that immediately signals a project with a distinctive creative identity.

The decision also reflects a subtle shift in Disney's live action strategy. Following the mixed reception to several recent remakes, including Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and Moana, the studio appears more willing to experiment with adaptations that expand existing worlds instead of recreating them beat for beat. The project joins an increasingly crowded development slate that includes Tangled, Hercules, Bambi, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Lilo & Stitch 2. It also arrives after Disney quietly shelved the planned Tiana animated Disney+ series in early 2025.

Some fairy tales are rewritten. Others simply find new storytellers.

Why The Princess and the Frog still holds a special place in Disney history

Released in December 2009, The Princess and the Frog marked Disney Animation's return to traditional hand-drawn animation after years dominated by computer-generated features. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the film introduced audiences to Tiana, Disney's first Black princess, whose determination to build her own restaurant grounded the fantasy in ambition rather than destiny. Set against the vibrant streets and jazz-filled nights of 1920s New Orleans, the story blended Southern folklore, romance, and music.

Long before Disney adapted it, the narrative evolved from E. D. Baker's 2002 novel The Frog Princess, itself inspired by the Brothers Grimm classic The Frog Prince. Although the film earned nearly $270 million worldwide and received Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, its cultural impact has continued to grow well beyond its theatrical run. Disney reinforced that legacy in 2024 by transforming Splash Mountain at Walt Disney World into Tiana's Bayou Adventure, ensuring that Princess Tiana remained at the heart of the parks even after the streaming series was cancelled.

With Colman Domingo now steering a fresh interpretation, Disney has an opportunity to honor that legacy while finally allowing the bayou to tell a different story. Whether this inspired adaptation becomes Disney's next live-action triumph remains to be seen.
