Disney’s Most Visually Ambitious New Short from Malcon Pierce Prompts Early "Sensitive Content" Discussion

Disney's newest animated short film, created by veteran animator Malcon Pierce, is already generating discussions not only through its visual elements but also its emotional content. From the legend behind Wreck-It Ralph, Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Moana comes a deep dive into grief, loss, and love in one of Disney's most ambitious visual projects yet. Pierce combines animation with music and movement to create a silent emotional narrative that tells a personal story that rightfully earns its content warnings.

Not for the faint of heart but Pierce's tear-jerker story is too stunning to steer clear of, despite being extremely sensitive.

Malcon Pierce's Versa shows how a celestial couple experiences different stages of love and healing after they suffer loss and emotional separation until they eventually find hope again. The film combines dance-like cosmic visuals with its narrative elements to create a unique artistic experience. Critics have praised it for its emotionally charged storytelling and innovative design. Disney+ has made sure to display a content warning for "sensitive content involving loss and grief" for the volatile subject matter the film deals with.

The online discourse on the movie started to focus on its intense emotional content that could have backfired for being insensitive. Versa centers on the death of a child and repairing the emotional cracks left by the loss to live on. The story was inspired in part by Malcon Pierce’s personal experience of losing his son, which further prompts viewers to take Disney's content warnings very seriously.

According to Pierce, the concept of the film originated from infant loss support groups he and his wife went to after they lost their son while he was making Moana. His experience of learning how grieving parents were triggered by watching certain movies even added more importance to the Disney+ content warning for sensitivity.

"I was inspired by the infant loss groups that my wife and I would go to. There were a lot of people talking about how they were triggered by watching movies featuring pregnant characters. And there was a lot of conversation about grief within couples who deal with the situation differently — either one of you wants to talk about the issue, or you don’t," Pierce told Deadline.

The film uses silent storytelling methods together with symbolic visual elements and emotional musical components to create an experimental Disney animation experience. Versa single-handedly pushes Disney short films into a more emotionally mature storytelling territory.

Disney fans consider it one of the studio's most artistically ambitious and emotionally powerful short films from the last few years.

What to expect from Versa?

Malcon Pierce's Versa represents both a deeply jarring and emotionally groundbreaking visual masterpiece. Its vivid colors symbolize its equally vivid dealings of emotions. Walking through every stage of grief, Pierce conveys mourning through the couple's dance after the light of their baby fades out.

When both the cosmic entities begin to visually and metaphorically break apart after undergoing such immense grief, time mends their cracks with gold, like kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery, not by hiding the cracks but by highlighting them with gold or silver linings.

However well-made with heart, a couple grieving the death of their child in a short film could still either be cathartic or offensive to people, which is why Disney's content sensitivity warning must be followed. Head to Disney+ to catch Versa streaming since March 27, 2026.
