Disney is moving closer to another artificial intelligence deal as Character.AI seeks Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The entertainment giant has emerged as a potential buyer for select assets from the chatbot company. The development offers a fresh glimpse into Disney’s efforts to explore AI beyond traditional film and television production.

For a company built around characters that audiences revisit across generations, the technology presents a different kind of opportunity. Disney is exploring ways to extend its intellectual property into interactive experiences, even as questions about AI, creative ownership, and audience trust continue to shape Hollywood’s response to the technology.

The proposed transaction could offer a clearer indication of where Disney sees its next digital opportunity.

Disney’s latest AI move comes with a specific target

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Worldwide Services has committed $20 million as the stalking horse bidder for a non-exclusive, perpetual license covering certain Character.AI intellectual property and claims. A stalking horse bid establishes an initial offer in a bankruptcy sale, setting a baseline against which competing bids can be made. It does not guarantee that Disney will acquire the assets.

Character.AI, founded by former Google engineers, built a platform where users could create and interact with AI-powered personalities. The company also expanded into AI-generated microdramas, taking conversational technology toward short-form entertainment. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the bankruptcy process is expected to conclude with an auction in late November or early December 2026, although Disney could still lose to another bidder.

The financial terms are only one part of this story. Disney has also been building a closer relationship with the people behind the startup, creating a potential bridge between Character.AI’s technology and the entertainment company’s wider digital ambitions.

Disney’s relationship with AI has already taken a complicated turn

In September 2026, Disney appointed former Character.AI chief executive Karandeep Anand as its first companywide chief technology officer, effective October 2. The appointment followed an earlier dispute over Character.AI chatbots that allegedly used Disney characters without authorization. The new arrangement therefore represents a notable shift from a conflict over intellectual property toward a potential commercial relationship involving AI technology.

There is also a wider strategic question. Disney previously partnered with OpenAI to explore fan-generated videos using its Sora platform, but that arrangement was subsequently unwound after OpenAI discontinued Sora. As Reuters reported, the latest bankruptcy proceedings give Disney another route into AI-powered entertainment, although the proposed license is non-exclusive.

Interactive character experiences offer one possible application, allowing audiences to engage with fictional personalities beyond watching them on screen. However, the commercial opportunity comes with significant responsibilities. Character.AI has faced lawsuits and regulatory scrutiny over chatbot safety, particularly allegations involving young users. Disney would need to consider how any technology it acquires could be adapted to its own standards for family-oriented entertainment.

For now, the outcome remains uncertain. Character.AI intends to continue operating during the court-supervised sale, which is expected to conclude in late November or early December. Disney’s opening bid gives it a position in the process, not a guaranteed acquisition.
