Just a week after a landmark corporate shakeup reshaped the entertainment landscape, subscribers are already feeling the financial ripple effects of a new era in streaming. As media conglomerates continue to consolidate and pitch new visions for profitability, the shifting corporate guard is immediately impacting household entertainment budgets - signaling that the ongoing trend of rising streaming costs shows no signs of slowing down under fresh leadership.

This can be seen in the latest Discovery+ price hike following its recent Skydance takeover.

Discovery+ is increasing its subscription rates for US customers, arriving just one week after the completion of Paramount’s blockbuster merger with Warner Bros. Discovery to establish Skydance Corp, per Variety. Effective immediately on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the monthly cost for the ad-supported tier will rise by $1 to $6.99, while the ad-free tier will jump by $2 to $11.99 in the United States.

Previously managed under Warner Bros. Discovery’s direct-to-consumer division, Discovery+ serves as the digital destination for hit programming from networks like HGTV, Food Network, TLC, ID, Discovery, Animal Planet, and Magnolia Network, with a portion of its catalog also accessible on HBO Max.

The new pricing applies right away to all incoming subscriptions. Meanwhile, current subscribers will be given a 30-day advance notice before the adjusted rates appear on billing statements generated on or after November 12, 2026. Industry observers note that the price adjustment was likely mapped out well in advance of the merger's finalization, as reported by Variety.

Talking a bit more about the merger, Skydance seems to have elaborate plans for the unification of HBO Max and Paramount+. 

While Skydance is keeping its standalone streaming services operating as they were prior to the merger for the time being, company chairman and CEO David Ellison has outlined long-term plans to eventually combine its major platforms - HBO Max and Paramount+ - into a unified product. The platform's vast library covers genres ranging from food, home improvement, and relationships to true crime, paranormal investigation, adventure, and natural history. 

Subscribers have access to fresh seasons of fan-favorite hits such as 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, 90 Day Fiancé: Hunt For Love, Sister Wives, Ghost Adventures, Scariest House in America, Sin City Rehab, and Gold Rush, alongside brand-new releases like A Very Haunted Renovation. Rounding out the service are other popular titles including Evil Lives Here, Expedition Unknown, and Deadliest Catch, alongside signature lifestyle and culinary programming from stars like Chip and Joanna Gaines, Guy Fieri, and Bobby Flay.
