Left for dead by a studio eager to bury it for a tax write-off, Coyote vs. Acme was supposed to join the cinematic graveyard of unreleased casualties. Not only has this film successfully managed to find a life in American theaters, but also outearned major Warner Bros. summer releases of the year.

When Warner Bros. chose to shelve the completed $70 million Coyote vs. Acme for a tax write-off back in November 2023, it sparked an industry-wide uproar that forced the studio into a rare about-face, allowing the filmmakers to shop the project elsewhere. That hard-fought persistence has officially paid off in spectacular fashion: after Ketchup Entertainment stepped in to acquire the distribution rights for roughly $50 million, Wile E. Coyote is now charging straight toward the top of the box office charts.

The movie's opening weekend domestic box office receipts of $15.5 million were the most in Ketchup Entertainment's history as a distributor, considerably surpassing the company's previous record of $3.1 million achieved by The Day the Earth Blew Up in 2024. Given the circumstances surrounding the film's difficult distribution path, industry commentators have characterized the reaction as a true win despite the film's low debut in relation to its production expense.

The movie has consistently finished in number two instead of taking the top spot, falling behind movies like Spider-Man: Brand New Day on its first weekend of release. Despite this, the movie has continued to do well in the weeks after its debut, reaching a domestic total of $22.5 million in just its first seven days.

Coyote vs. Acme is a wacky idea that works wonders

The film, which combines live action and animation, is based on Ian Frazier's satirical essay Coyote v. Acme. Wile E. Coyote partners up with a personal injury lawyer to sue the ACME Corporation for decades of defective products that have been used against him in his never-ending quest for the Road Runner. Samy Burch wrote the script based on a plot she co-developed with James Gunn and Jeremy Slater.

James Gunn is also producing under the Troll Court Entertainment banner. Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena, Luis Guzmán, and Martha Kelly star in the Dave Green-directed movie, which combines the Looney Tunes tradition with a new live-action framing technique based on the character's lengthy history of ACME-related tragedy.
