What makes a sequel great, perhaps even greater than the phenomenon of the first one? This question is certainly what most filmmakers with a massive blockbuster on their hands and a standing offer for a follow-up fail to figure out, but not Godzilla Minus One's director, Takashi Yamazaki. Yamazaki found something basic that many missed with sequels like Aliens and Terminator 2. In the movies, he found the answer to his sequel problem that made the Godzilla Minus Zero possible.

In a latest interview, Takashi Yamazaki has credited these James Cameron sequels as major inspirations for the Godzilla follow-up.

James Cameron has undoubtedly made the most successful sequels of all time, and Aliens and Terminator 2 are only a few examples of the same. And Takashi Yamazaki took notes on what made those sequels even bigger than their predecessors. In an interview with Empire Online, the Godzilla Minus Zero director shared that he was inspired by Cameron’s prowess in making a compelling sequel.

“I’m going to have to give credit to James Cameron,” said Yamazaki, revealing Aliens and Terminator 2 as some of his favorite sequels.

He further pointed to the filmmaker's ability to examine an original story, uncover fresh narrative angles, and expand significantly upon the established foundation. Yamazaki noted his fascination with how Cameron's sequels frequently manage to outperform their predecessors while staying faithful to the core mythos.

True to the formula of a classic James Cameron-style sequel, the upcoming film will feature the return of its central cast members, with Godzilla Minus One stars Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe reprising their roles for Godzilla Minus Zero. In his interview with Empire, director Takashi Yamazaki emphasized that shifting the narrative spotlight onto the characters' dynamic as a family unit moves the sequel onto a distinct new creative path, steering the story in an entirely fresh direction.

The plot of Godzilla Minus Zero

Set in 1949 - precisely two years after the harrowing events of its predecessor - the story picks up in a nation that was reduced to zero by war and plunged into the negative by Godzilla's wrath. Following years of grueling struggle, Japan has finally begun to recover, allowing its citizens to reclaim a semblance of normal life. However, just as society clings to a hard-won peace, a catastrophic new threat emerges to shatter that fragile hope in an instant. With the stakes higher than ever, the premise of Godzilla Minus Zero warns that there will be no third time - everything ends here.
