Sequels have become Hollywood’s favorite form of déjà vu. Sometimes, it resurrects a beloved story just when audiences thought they had said goodbye; other times, it reminds everyone why the original was better left alone.

For Sandra Bullock, the history is particularly complicated. Her résumé includes some of the most recognizable films of the 1990s and 2000s, from Speed to Miss Congeniality, but the sequel chapter of that résumé has been a decidedly less magical one. Now, nearly three decades after Practical Magic, she is back in sequel territory alongside Nicole Kidman.

And when the subject of sequels came up, Bullock had a couple of cautionary tales ready.

Sandra Bullock has some sequels baggage to deal with

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman recently sat for an interview with CBR host Grae Drake. The host pointed out an amusing coincidence in Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s filmographies: despite decades of starring in major Hollywood films, neither actress has appeared in many sequels. Kidman initially struggled to name one, before remembering Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, while Bullock noted that at least Kidman had successful sequels under her belt.

From there, Drake wondered whether either actress had ever had a sequel that simply failed to come together as hoped. That is what prompted Bullock to reminisce about her two failed sequels.

“Well, I mean, I was in two sequels that didn't work out,” Bullock said.

Bullock was referring to Speed 2: Cruise Control and Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, two follow-ups that became the obvious exceptions in an otherwise sequel-light filmography. However, Kidman pointed out that this was precisely why “third time’s a charm,” referring to Practical Magic 2 and its place as Bullock’s third sequel in the conversation with CBR.

While Bullock misunderstood the third sequel bit, she eventually came around, proving that even witches can get their girl math wrong. And speaking of witches reuniting after so long, what is Bullock's third sequel all about?

What is Practical Magic 2 about?

Nearly 30 years after Sally and Gillian Owens first bewitched audiences, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are returning as the sisters for Practical Magic 2. The original 1998 film initially received a mixed reception, but its combination of witchcraft, sisterhood, romance, and unapologetic female energy gradually transformed it into a cult favorite.

The sequel brings the Owens family back together as the sisters face a new threat involving the dark curse that has haunted their bloodline. The film also expands the family mythology, introducing a younger generation of Owens women played by Joey King and Maisie Williams.

Directed by Susanne Bier and inspired by Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic, Practical Magic 2 reunites Bullock and Kidman with Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, while adding a new generation to the coven. It arrives in theaters September 10, giving Bullock a chance to find out whether the third time really is the charm.
