As comic fans buckle their seatbelt for a rollercoaster ride through the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Deadpool & Wolverine almost two months from now, the surge of Easter eggs is brimming and tumbling the storehouse of spoilers. Especially as fan theories lean on Beau DeMayo’s X-Men ‘97 for clues of past and future to dot the lines and link Wolverine’s journey through timelines, they have found a massive clue that could tie the time-bomb to Deadpool & Wolverine.

Reflecting on season 1’s finale this time, it appears that DeMayo meant it when he said he is passing the baton of Wolverine’s storyline to Deadpool & Wolverine.

Prior to the release of X-Men ‘97, the creator Beau DeMayo addressed fan inquiries about the whereabouts of certain MCU characters like Deadpool. When DeMayo revealed Deadpool remains “off-limits” for the show, fans were quick to point out yet another remark by the creator that hinted at his “passing the baton” to Ryan Reynolds for Wolverine’s storyline. However, at the end of the first installment, in Tolerance is Extinction- Part 2, Wolverine’s adamantium was sucked out by Magneto, like from the pages of 1993’s X-Men #25.

Now, in the Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailers, Wolverine does not seem welcomed as the bartender makes clear. This could possibly mean that Wolverine has done something horrible that has got the world spewing hate on him. However, in X-Men ‘97, it was not the case because Wolverine was severely injured and his healing factors failed to contain the loss. Furthermore, given that the X-Men were led to divergent timelines in the future, it is still a question of where Logan, Storm, and Morph ended up.

Even though the ideal branch could situate Logan through the portal to Deadpool’s universe in Deadpool & Wolverine, given the rumor that the Logans from both worlds are the same, it depends on time to tell what the makers made peace with.

As Deadpool & Wolverine reinvents MCU’s film slate as the certified Marvel Jesus, besides the burning question of Wolverine’s whereabouts, there is a rumor that connects the world of X-Men ‘97 with the movie apart from the fan theory. The rumor suggests that it will herald the canonization of the animated universe, beginning with X-Men ‘97. If one were to follow that storyline, the Logans from both premises should be one.

Technically, in Deadpool & Wolverine, Logan might emerge via a different timeline while continuing his journey in X-Men ‘97. Especially given his adamantium claws have been ripped off, it is possible that in X-Men ‘97, Logan will use his bone claws until the adamantium ones are restored in Deadpool & Wolverine, as evidenced in the trailer. In summary, the same version of Logan would lead to two parallel paths. Since whether these speculative pieces fall into place will be revealed in time, fans need to wait for Deadpool & Wolverine’s release in the theaters.
