Princess Diana will directly speak for herself in Diana Unheard, a three-part documentary built around hours of never-before-heard recordings. Nearly three decades after her death, Princess Diana remains one of the royal family’s most revisited figures on screen. This project, however, is built less around another retrospective interpretation than material she deliberately helped create, giving its title a literal purpose.

The tapes, as we will see, were never casual recordings; Princess Diana took actually considerable risks to ensure her account could leave palace walls.

Diana Unheard puts Princess Diana’s voice back at the center

As per Deadline, the recordings that will be featured and focused on in Diana Unheard come from secret 1991 conversations between the late royal and her friend, James Colthurst. It is these recording that later became foundational material for Andrew Morton’s 1992 biography Diana: Her True Story, which altered public understanding of her marriage and royal life.

Love Monday TV worked with Colthurst and Morton to access several hours of the original recordings. In them, Princess Diana discusses her childhood, marriage, now King Charles and Queen Camilla, then Prince Andrew and her hopes for Princes William and Harry. Producers say she devised a plan to smuggle the tapes from Kensington Palace so her account could survive.

Creative director Kerene Barefield has even explained the documentary’s intent.

“The media always gave us this tragedy that Diana was sad and lonely and she was manipulated,” he has said, recalling the broader narrative around the late Princess of Wales.

"These tapes don’t tell that story at all. They tell a story of an incredibly brave woman who had agency and knew what she wanted and how she was going to get to it," Barefield said of the reroute, according to Deadline.

The tapes may be decades old, but the series is being positioned as more than another excavation of royal history.

For Cineflix Rights’ Richard Life, Princess Diana’s enduring pull remains straightforward: “Thirty years on, Diana remains a global icon and source of endless fascination for viewers.”

That fascination is precisely what Diana Unheard is attempting to redirect. Rather than asking others to explain Princess Diana again, or have yet another tribute incanted, the documentary’s strongest proposition is simpler: let audiences hear what she chose to say.
