Simon Williams had an unexpected competition even before his stand-alone Marvel series was conceived. Wonder Man took viewers aback with its innovative character-based comic adventure, which follows Williams' and Trevor Slattery's pursuit of acting roles in a Hollywood movie remake. But, according to the show's creator, Destin Daniel Cretton, the initial concept did not include Simon as its central character at all.

Wonder Man's initial concept developed into a new idea that combined Destin Daniel Cretton's two projects around Hollywood. What began as a joke pitch on the set of Shang-Chi, Trevor Slattery, the unusual character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, became the center of Cretton's attention for a solo project.

"We should create a show that's just called Trevor Goes To Hollywood, and watching him come back to Hollywood and go and revisit all the things he has left behind," Cretton said in an interview with Discussing Films, speaking on his initial playful pitch to create a show on Trevor Slattery solely for his admiration towards Sir Ben Kingsley's performance.

“It then combined with a show Marvel was already developing, which was also around Hollywood, but with Simon Williams," added Cretton, reminiscing about how he and producer Jonathan Schwartz were discussing a show centered on Trevor Slattery during their collaboration on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, even floating the idea with Kingsley himself.

When Marvel executives brought in their Simon Williams-centered comedy project that focused on a similar trope, their ideas collided to create the brilliance that Marvel's Wonder Man has showcased, per Cretton's interview. Things fell into place, and the creative elements of the show developed into a single vision, which spotlighted both characters through their respective acting journeys, ending with a deficiency of answers and leaving viewers hanging from the cliff, wanting another season.

Wonder Man showrunners spills the beans on a possible Season 2

Wonder Man’s story leaves all the doors wide open for a potential season 2, though there is no official confirmation as such, despite the success of the first season. However, the showrunner, Andrew Guest, has shown enthusiasm to revive the show.

"If we did get the opportunity, I have put some thought into what might happen for Simon Williams," Guest told The Direct, teasing the possibility of further episodes, hinting that there is room to explore Simon Williams’ journey and character arcs left open by the finale.
