Destin Daniel Cretton went down a YouTube rabbit hole to seek inspiration for particular scenes in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The fourth installment in Tom Holland's Spider-Man franchise is a clean slate for Peter Parker after the heartbreaking events of No Way Home. With the world, including the people he loves, having no memory of who he is, Peter starts a new chapter as he seemingly evolves and faces new threats. 

While Cretton drew inspiration from the previous Spider-Man films, he also sought out new ideas and sources to bring a refreshing new perspective to the film. And that is when he turned to an unlikely source to bring Peter Parker’s journey closer to the people.

During his interview with Rolling Stone, Destin Daniel Cretton was asked about the camera angles that emphasize the dizzying heights in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The director revealed that the team drew inspiration from GoPro footage on YouTube, studying how real-life parkour athletes and wingsuit flyers capture a sense of speed and danger. Cretton explained that his aim was to bring Peter Parker's journey closer to the audience, making viewers feel every swing, soaring leap, and heart-stopping drop alongside Spider-Man.

“Because of advancements like how small cameras can get these days, we were able to now look at YouTube footage of wingsuiters and parkour…and analyze what angles make your heart drop, that make you feel like you’re right there with them,” he said.

There was yet another fascinating element that Cretton spoke about during his interview with Rolling Stone. While Holland's commitment to The Odyssey delayed production on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the experience ultimately benefited the Marvel sequel. As Cretton explained, working on Christopher Nolan's epic helped Holland take a bolder approach to Peter Parker. 

“When you really want something to feel fresh for an audience, we do have to take some swings that may be a little more out of the box. And I think that experience made him even more willing to take some of those swings,” he said.

Not just the director, the actor also previously hinted at how people will witness a never-before-seen version of Peter Parker.

Speaking about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland said one of the biggest challenges was balancing Peter Parker's two identities, which are the superhero behind the mask and the young man beneath it. While Spider-Man continues to fight crime, Peter is left alone in a world where no one remembers who he is. And this emotional aspect became the heart of the movie.

"When we were designing the character arc and putting the script together, it was really important for us to showcase to audiences that Peter Parker is in the darkest chapter of his life," Holland said, as per Blavity: News.

In his interview, Holland explained that Peter's emotional journey became a key focus of the film. He described Peter as someone who is lost and searching for where he truly belongs. While hope has always been one of Spider-Man's real powers, Brand New Day steps away from the character's usual optimism to explore a more vulnerable side of Peter Parker, to show a version of the beloved Marvel hero they have never seen on screen before.
