Spider-Man: Brand New Day already feels bigger than a solo Spider-Man movie, thanks to the heavy presence of the Punisher and the Hulk. That makes Peter Parker’s story seem less like a simple street-level sequel and more like a collision of personalities, power, and consequences, with Spider-Man caught in the middle of much larger forces.

By the time the film gets to Hulk, the director is teasing something more surprising than just another smash-and-crash cameo.

Destin Daniel Cretton is framing Hulk as more than a blockbuster bonus in Spider-Man: Brand New Day; he wants the character to feel like a mirror for Peter Parker’s own emotional crossroads. Speaking to Collider, Cretton revealed.

“The scenes with Bruce & Hulk are going to be big, explosive, really exciting… I think you’ll also be surprised at the intimacy of it and the reflection that Hulk has for the journey that Peter is on.”

That promise matters because the Hulk has often been used in the MCU as a punchline, a spectacle machine, or a giant fight payoff rather than as a character with a deeply explored emotional core. Outside a few key beats, the character’s inner life has usually taken a back seat to transformation scenes and crowd-pleasing destruction. Cretton’s comments to Collider suggest that Brand New Day may finally give Bruce Banner and Hulk something more personal to do.

He expanded that idea by stressing that the movie is not just about scale, but about what Hulk represents in Peter’s story. If the film follows through, the Bruce Banner material could add a layer of vulnerability and self-recognition to a character who is often treated as pure chaos. That makes this matchup especially intriguing, because Spider-Man and Hulk may end up sharing not just action beats, but emotional terrain.

That emotional overlap also reflects the uncertainty surrounding Spider-Man’s future on and off screen.

Amy Pascal wants Tom Holland to stay in the Spider-Man suit for the long haul, even as Holland himself has openly talked about eventually passing the role on. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day approaches, the franchise is leaning harder into a grounded Peter Parker story, and Pascal is clearly hoping this era lasts much longer than one more movie. 

“We hope Tom’s going to be our Spider-Man forever.” Pascal said. She also stressed that every Spider-Man film has to work as its own story, not just as a setup for the next one. That fits the current direction of Brand New Day, which looks far more street-level than the multiverse scale seen in recent MCU entries.

Still, Holland has been inconsistent in the most human way possible. He has talked about handing the role to a younger performer while also saying he wants to help shape that transition. He has even suggested names like Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and Spider-Woman as possible next steps for the franchise. In that sense, Spider-Man is broke in the story too, with Peter Parker living in a world that no longer remembers him and carrying that loneliness into the new film.
