Despite ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, ‘Dune: Part Two’, and ‘Joker: Folie À Deux’, Why Is 2024 Still Set to Be Worse Than 2023 for Movies?

Year on year Hollywood continues its churning mill of movies and content. After stagnant years during the pandemic, the world's entertainment capital returned to its tracks and has moved ahead with a slew of productions. Furthermore, for 2024, movie-goers can expect the big screens to keep on buzzing for not long after the heavily anticipated release of Dune: Part Two, comic book juggernauts like Deadpool & Wolverine and Joker: Folie à Deux stand lined up.

Anticipation surpassing the last year, nonetheless, Hollywood will have to brace for a lower box office turnover than 2023, and the reasons are manifold.

The start of the year saw movies open with slight disappointments in Henry Cavill’s Argylle, and Sydney Sweeney’s Madame Web. Fortunately, the reception pickup up full steam in March following the drop of Timothée Chalamet’s Dune: Part Two, which has deepened Hollywood’s treasury. However, a report by a consultancy named Gower Street Analytics shared by Variety has put forth its prediction that revenue will decrease by 5% or 3% when accounted for inflation despite big-name movies playing or lined up for release.

Taking into account a host of factors, the firm pitched that Hollywood may register $32.3 billion at the global box office against $33.9 billion in 2023. Changes to the release calendar marred by the strikes stand as one major reason, with the entirety of North America looking at a slowdown and China coming out as the only major market expected to grow but not enough to pull ahead of last year despite major releases incoming in the span of the next few months.

In the face of gloomy predictions, actual swooning by cinephiles worldwide may push the tide to positivity. For starters, against its $190 million budget and an estimated $500 million to register profits, Dune: Part Two crossed past $660 million at the global box office. Thereafter, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has already crossed past $350 million in its second week with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire ready to add into the pockets.

Looking to sweep past the mammoth joint collections of Barbie and Oppenheimer in 2023 stands Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s MCU starrer Deadpool & Wolverine whose recent runtime tease may bode well for fans. Finally, Joker: Folie à Deux has the hype train running with the anticipation of seeing a musical adaptation starring Lady Gaga reaching its zenith. All in all, Hollywood may well punch above its weight if the movies stay true to their hype.
