Denis Villeneuve has detailed a special psychedelic unit that is responsible for some of the trippy visuals from Dune: Part Three. As any other filmmaker would want, Denis Villeneuve wants his iconic Dune trilogy to go out with a bang, and he seems to have left no stone unturned to that end. The recently launched trailer for the third installment of the beloved Frank Herbert IP gives a glimpse of the impending doom Paul Atreides’s rise to power will bring and leaves viewers with many questions that will only be answered once the movie arrives in theaters.

But for the time being, Villeneuve has given fans something to 'trip' their interest further in the film.

Denis Villeneuve and Timothée Chalamet attended the Global IMAX fan event on Wednesday at the AMC multiplex in Burbank, California, to unveil the new teaser for Dune: Part Three. During the Q&A, Villeneuve was asked what aspects of his French-Canadian ancestry he was incorporating into the movie. In his reply, he mentioned a special psychedelic unit that has everyone hooked with its unique approach.

“I created a special small unit, very tiny unit, of a few filmmakers. And their task was to do experiments in front of the camera to bring some crazy, insane footage that I would use for the movie. And that unit was called the psychedelic unit,” Villeneuve said.

Denis Villeneuve was sure to explain the rationale behind this decision to the audience. He said that he grew up watching movies, especially experimental ones from the National Film Board. Most of his knowledge about cinema and filmmaking comes from watching short films from the National Film Board of Canada, which is the vibe he seems to have sought to incorporate into Dune: Part Three.

This became the driving force behind the genesis of the psychedelic unit, which is spearheaded by two young French Canadians, Kristof Brandl and Salomé Villeneuve, whose main task was to bring together some of the most insane footage that has now become the crown jewel of Dune: Part Three’s aesthetics. Upon confirmation by Gizmodo's io9, it was revealed that Salomé Villeneuve, in fact, is the filmmaker's daughter.
