DCU or MCU? Frank Grillo Explains Why One Studio Feels Safer for Actors
Superhero franchises have become the modern version of Greek mythology, except the gods are traded between studios and their capes come with billion-dollar box office clauses. Between Marvel’s improv circus and DC’s newfound obsession with structure, one actor has played both sides of Olympus. Frank Grillo, the man who has squared off against Captain America and walked into James Gunn’s chaotic playground, finally decided to drop a truth bomb about which studio actually feels like home.
While one studio thrives on laminated schedules and the other on last-minute chaos, Grillo’s experience shows how superhero universes can feel like either boot camp or improv night.

Frank Grillo has walked the superhero tightrope on both sides, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the new DC Universe, and he says the experiences could not feel more different. In a recent PEOPLE interview, the actor explained that DCU operates with a clear sense of structure, with scripts laid out and a “real secure handle on what’s happening,” making it feel safer. By contrast, Marvel often had him stepping into scenes blind, where storylines, character arcs, and even dialogue could shift at the last second.
For Frank Grillo, that unpredictability was both thrilling and unnerving. He admitted in the interview that Marvel’s spontaneous, “fly by the seat of your pants” energy has worked commercially, but for him, it sometimes felt a "little scary” as an actor. In contrast, working under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU feels more contained, personal, and collaborative, a space where performers can grow with the project instead of being left in the dark.
While Grillo compared the sets to survival camps versus safe houses, Coy Jandreau zoomed out, warning that Marvel’s empire itself might be wobbling under its own blockbuster weight.

Frank Grillo is not the only one calling out Marvel’s shaky footing. Comic book commentator Coy Jandreau also raised the red flag, criticizing the MCU’s growing dependence on bloated budgets and erratic storytelling choices. Speaking on his podcast The Escape Pod, he argued that Marvel should take notes from DC’s current approach, which favors balance and intimacy over extremes. His remarks landed like a comic-con mic drop, igniting fandoms into another round of heated debate.

Coy Jandreau compared the current chaos to comic book history itself, trading the wild Golden Age for the layered Silver Age. To him, superhero films now teeter on a pivot point, where Marvel could reclaim glory by borrowing DC’s steadier rhythm. With both Frank Grillo and Jandreau humming the same warning chorus, the takeaway is blunt: Marvel’s crown is slipping, and cliffhangers alone will not save a kingdom built on unfinished scripts.
