Clayface is looking more horrifying by the day. A new poster for the upcoming DC Studios body-horror film offers a striking glimpse of Tom Rhys Harries as Gotham’s tragic villain, showcasing his unsettling clay-like appearance. With the October release date approaching, the Batman spin-off is finally letting its monster take shape with the help of its new tv spot.

Until now, fans had mostly seen Tom Rhys Harries’ Clayface from the side or with half his face hidden, making this fuller look especially intriguing.

The new TV spot for Clayface is bringing the body horror front and center, with Matt Hagen looking less like a Gotham celebrity and more like a walking nightmare. First showcased to an exclusive audience at industry events in Las Vegas, the footage offers a disturbing preview of the Batman villain’s transformation and unsettling new abilities.

The brief spot zeroes in on Matt Hagen’s face as his transformation begins to take a gruesome turn. His eye and surrounding features appear to lose their normal structure, gradually slipping into a melting, clay-like form. It is a wonderfully creepy reminder that Clayface is not exactly planning to keep the body horror politely off-screen.

The footage also teases the frightening explanation behind Matt Hagen’s strange condition. A voiceover explains that Hagen can change his face, turning what might sound like a useful Hollywood trick into something considerably more sinister. With the character’s appearance literally breaking apart, the television spot makes Gotham’s newest nightmare look wonderfully uncomfortable.

Naturally, the gooey transformation has also got fans wondering whether DC is embracing the comics or cooking up an entirely new Clayface recipe.

What direction is DC taking with Clayface?

DC Studios is taking Clayface somewhere far removed from the usual superhero playbook. Instead of treating Matt Hagen as another Batman villain waiting to throw punches, the film turns his transformation into an R-rated body-horror tragedy, with Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini shaping the story and James Watkins directing. The result sounds considerably messier than a conventional comic-book adventure.

The story draws from Matt Hagen’s tragic origin in Batman: The Animated Series, while giving his disfigurement, identity crisis, and experimental treatment considerably more room to breathe. Tom Rhys Harries plays the doomed actor, with Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Corr, whose chemical experiment triggers Hagen’s terrifying cellular transformation. Ultimately, DC Studios appears to be treating Clayface as a character tragedy first and a Batman story second.
