DC Studios has hired Francis Galluppi to write a new John Constantine movie. The project sits in very early development, so no director or cast has been announced yet. Representatives for DC Studios declined to comment on the news. Galluppi is currently writing and directing Evil Dead Wrath, the seventh film in that horror franchise. The hiring arrives while Clayface keeps shapeshifting through theaters with more than $90 million worldwide.

Deadline reported that Galluppi developed the original story for Evil Dead Wrath before pitching it to Sam Raimi in 2024. The project follows his feature debut, The Last Stop in Yuma County, which premiered to critical acclaim at Fantastic Fest. Raimi praised Galluppi's ability to build tension before unleashing chaos, a quality that could serve him well on Constantine. Warner Bros. is set to release Evil Dead Wrath on April 7, 2028.

While Galluppi prepares a fresh take, the last big-screen John Constantine happily broke a few comic book rules in 2005.

Francis Lawrence explains how Keanu Reeves played a different Constantine

Francis Lawrence, the director of Constantine, revealed that Keanu Reeves never played a carbon copy of the comic book hero. Lawrence and Reeves joined Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year to mark the film's 20th anniversary. Lawrence liked the character's spirit but saw no reason to follow every visual detail from the comics. Reeve's Constantine ditched the blonde hair and English accent, while his signature coat changed from black to brown.

Lawrence also set the story in Los Angeles instead of the comic’s Liverpool, inspired by noir classics like The Maltese Falcon and The Third Man. Jim Thompson novels convinced him that the city made a perfect modern noir backdrop. Lawrence praised Reeves for filming on location, a very bold call when Toronto usually doubled for Los Angeles. Francis Galluppi now decides which comic rules the occult detective gets to break next.
