Tom Cruise’s upcoming Digger looks like a sharp left turn: a darkly comic, high-wire satire about a powerful man racing to save the world from disaster after causing it himself. Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the film brings Cruise back into a performance space that feels closer to the sly, self-aware energy of Risky Business than to his usual action-hero mode.

That matters because Cruise’s early appeal was never just muscle and mission; it was timing, charm, and a slightly mischievous comic edge. Digger seems designed to revive that side of him, while still letting him play a larger-than-life figure under pressure. The premise alone gives Cruise room to be funny, frantic, and dangerous all at once. 

  Iñárritu, who co-wrote the film and has described it as a comedy of catastrophic proportions, is no stranger to mixing intensity with dark humor. The cast also includes Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons, lending the movie a well-stocked ensemble alongside Cruise. Digger is set for release in the United States on October 2, 2026, with an IMAX rollout planned.
