The Venice Film Festival News Department decided the first headline deserved a flourish. Danny Boyle's Ink has officially been chosen to open the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The biographical media drama will make its world premiere on September 2 inside the Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema.

The opening night honor comes with even higher stakes. Ink will not simply launch the festival but also compete for the coveted Golden Lion. Organized by La Biennale di Venezia under artistic director Alberto Barbera, the 83rd edition runs from September 2 through September 12, while the complete lineup arrives on July 23.

For Danny Boyle, this announcement carries an extra layer of prestige. Despite an Academy Award-winning career, celebrated festival runs, and a filmography that has often made Danny Boyle the benchmark in comparisons with Christopher Nolan, Ink marks Boyle's first feature selected for the Venice Film Festival's official competition.

Danny Boyle's pedigree and the Venice Film Festival seal of approval are only part of what makes Ink so interesting.

Danny Boyle is not making a routine media biopic. Ink dives into Rupert Murdoch's 1969 takeover of The Sun, the seismic moment that reshaped British tabloid journalism. With Olivier Award winner James Graham adapting his own acclaimed stage play, the film promises sharp political drama wrapped inside Boyle's trademark cinematic momentum.

Then comes the cast. Guy Pearce steps into Rupert Murdoch's earliest empire-building years, while Jack O'Connell plays Larry Lamb, the editor who helped reinvent The Sun. Throw in Claire Foy, a story tracing the birth of sensationalist news culture, and Boyle's self-described explosive ride, and Venice suddenly has a very fitting opening act.
