When Architectural Digest toured Dakota Johnson's home in 2020, the video became an instant classic, admired for its design and endlessly quoted for its memes. Every corner of the house felt deliberate and full of personality, and the impression stands for her life as well. As the actress stars next to Anne Hathaway in Verity, her career seems to be the most eye-catching piece in her portfolio.

Johnson is known to make daring choices when it comes to the movies she does, having swung through webs once, audiences remain keen to see what the upcoming Dakota Johnson projects are.

A Tree Is Blue

After showcasing what is coming to be called a dynamic performance in Verity, Dakota Johnson will be gearing up to reveal a whole new set of talent by making her feature film directorial debut in A Tree Is Blue. Johnson, who has mostly been known for her acting chops, has once before also put her directorial expertise to the test in the short movie Loser Baby, which premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival. However, A Tree Is Blue stands at a completely different scale for various reasons.

Firstly, Johnson will not just be directing the movie but also contributing to the production alongside Ro Donnelly and Sam Racanelli for TeaTime Productions. Whereas Rob Paris and Mike Witherill will produce for Rivulet, responsible for financing the movie, which has a budget of under $10 million.

Apart from Dakota Johnson, the movie will have another first-timer in Vanessa Burghardt. Burghardt, who has worked in movies like Cha Cha Real Smooth, will be making her screenwriting debut with this movie.

With the plot centred around a woman on the autism spectrum who sets out to live life on her terms following her high school graduation, leaving behind an overprotective mother, the emotional stakes are already high. While Charli XCX and Jessica Alba's names are making the rounds, nothing is confirmed as of yet, especially since the last update regarding the movie came all the way back in October 2025.

Three Incestuous Sisters

Meeting the curious, aforementioned curiosity-inducing title halfway is The Incestuous Sisters. The credit for the title goes to  Audrey Niffenegger, who published this fable over twenty years ago. As per the summary of her book, the story follows three sisters named Ophile, Clothilde, and Bettine, two of whom fall in love with a boy named Paris, a lighthouse keeper who replaced his father following his untimely death due to a lightning strike during a thunderstorm.

To make matters worse, Paris reciprocates Bettine's feelings, leaving Ophile heartbroken. The events that follow include a peculiar baby, havoc, and revenge.

Convinced by the story on paper, Jessie Buckley, Saoirse Ronan, and Dakota Johnson were pitched as the sisters. Deadline reported that Josh O'Connor would also be starring. To match up to the cast, the brains behind the camera include the Italian director Alice Rohrwacher, who will also serve as a screenwriter alongside Ottessa Moshfegh. With not many details regarding its development having been made public, a release of 2027-2028 is expected.

Trudy Blue

One of the most anticipated among Dakota Johnson's upcoming projects is Trudy Blue. This will be the first time Johnson properly steps into the flesh, or more specifically, the metal suit of a science-fiction story. The story, helmed by Angus MacLane, follows an outlawed android maid who wakes up far from home in a landfill. Set in the near future, the movie will follow Johnson's character's journey as she paves her way back to where she belongs.

The credentials for the production team match those of A Tree Is Blue, owing to the movie being produced by TeaTime Productions, a production company founded by Dakota Johnson and Ro Donnelly. Deadline exclusively reported back in November 2025 that the movie was launching sales at AFM, placing an update right around the corner.

From stepping behind the camera for A Tree Is Blue to joining a starry fable adaptation and suiting up as an android in Trudy Blue, Dakota Johnson's slate shows an actress who keeps choosing the unexpected. With most of these projects stand in various stages of production, fans have plenty to look forward to.
