A live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie is in the works at Paramount, bringing CD Projekt Red’s sprawling dystopian universe closer to the big screen. The announcement puts one of gaming’s most recognizable futuristic worlds on the path to another major adaptation.

For fans who have spent hours navigating Night City, the prospect of a live-action film raises an intriguing question: can Hollywood capture the neon-soaked streets, corporate warfare, and morally complicated characters that made the game such a phenomenon? The project is still in its early stages, but there are already a few important details worth knowing.

Here is everything we know so far about the Cyberpunk 2077 movie, from its release date and potential cast to the story possibilities behind Paramount’s adaptation.

Cyberpunk 2077 live-action movie release date

Paramount has not announced a release date for the Cyberpunk 2077 live-action movie. The film is in development, which means it is too early to establish when production will begin or when audiences might see it in theaters. The report establishes the project’s key creative partnership, but it does not confirm a director, screenwriter, or production schedule.

Deadline has reported that Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish video game developer and franchise rights holder. Paramount has also been exploring other video game properties, including its co-production with Legendary on the upcoming Street Fighter adaptation, scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 16, 2026.

The wider slate reflects Hollywood’s continuing interest in recognizable gaming franchises, although each adaptation must find its own way to appeal to audiences beyond the gaming community.

With the project still taking shape, the next big question is who could bring Night City’s dangerous residents to life.

Cyberpunk 2077 live-action movie cast: Who could star?

No cast members have been officially announced for the Cyberpunk 2077 movie. It is also unclear whether Paramount intends to adapt the story of V and Johnny Silverhand directly or introduce an entirely new set of characters within the same universe.

Naturally, fans may speculate about actors who could embody the game's larger-than-life personalities. Keanu Reeves famously voiced and portrayed Johnny in the game, while Idris Elba joined the franchise as Solomon Reed in the Phantom Liberty expansion. Their established connections to the property make them obvious names for fan discussions, but neither actor has been confirmed for the film.

Until Paramount announces its casting plans, any suggestions about returning performers or new Hollywood leads remain speculation.

Cyberpunk 2077 Live-Action movie: Inside the story and its night city setting

The movie's official plot has not been revealed, leaving Paramount considerable room to choose its approach. The game takes place in Night City, a fictional metropolis in California where technological advancement exists alongside extreme inequality, violent street gangs, and corporations with extraordinary power. Its visual identity combines luminous advertisements, crowded streets, cybernetic enhancements, and a culture in which people can modify their bodies as readily as they can change their allegiances.

The original game's central story follows V, a mercenary whose life changes after a dangerous heist leaves them carrying a biochip containing an engram of Johnny Silverhand. As Johnny's consciousness begins to overwrite V's mind, the two are forced into an uneasy partnership while searching for a way to survive. Their struggle brings them into conflict with Arasaka, the powerful corporation whose influence reaches deep into Night City's political and economic life.

The franchise arrives with a substantial audience already invested in its world. Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, while its Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million copies. Those figures underline the property's reach, although a successful game does not automatically guarantee a successful film. The adaptation will need to translate the experience of exploring Night City into a coherent cinematic story rather than simply reproduce its most recognizable imagery.

For now, the Cyberpunk 2077 movie remains a project to watch rather than a film with a confirmed release window. Paramount and CD Projekt Red have a rich fictional world to draw from, but its eventual cast, plot, and production timeline remain unknown.
