Crystal Lake creator Brad Caleb Kane had a good reason for keeping one iconic horror element out of his new series, and that is the hockey mask. Fans of the Friday the 13th franchise know the mask all too well. Over the years, it has become one of the most recognizable symbols of horror, which evokes the terror of Jason Voorhees.
However, despite its deep connection to the franchise, this particular element does not appear in the new show. As Crystal Lake has arrived to haunt both old and new fans, there is a crucial reason in the timeline why the series chose to leave this iconic piece of horror history behind.

In Crystal Lake, Brad Caleb Kane turns back the clock to the 1970s, focusing on Pamela Voorhees and her story of pain and trauma. Pamela was the original k***** in the first Friday the 13th film, and Crystal Lake serves as its prequel. Since the iconic hockey mask did not appear until the third film, the creator revealed that they decided not to include this symbol of terror, as reported by Variety.
“But we’re doing a show that predates Pamela’s murder in the first movie, and the hockey mask … obviously, we all know that didn’t come until the third movie,” he said.

He explained that, fortunately, they did not have any rights issues (via Variety) but could not include the hockey mask, as it would not fit with the timeline of the new series. Moreover, the hockey mask is an iconic horror look worn by the antagonist Jason Voorhees in the films. The eight-episode series, however, focuses on the story of Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini.
While Kane may have left the hockey mask out, the creator has claimed to have gone all out to create a bone-chilling horror series.
Brad Caleb Kane says Crystal Lake is more brutal than films
Crystal Lake is a prequel to the original Friday the 13th movie. So, while the series is expected to bring back the slasher horror that made the franchise famous, creator Brad Caleb Kane has promised something even more thrilling. In his interview during his appearance at New York Comic Con, he shared that the new series will be more brutal than the franchise has ever been.
“So if you’re wondering if we’re ever going to go full fathom Friday the 13th, we go there and we drop a lot of bodies in really creative ways. It’s a lot more brutal. I think it’s even more brutal in many ways from some of the movies,” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Linda Cardellini, in her conversation with Variety, also mentioned that there are a few graphic scenes in the show. She further warned that these scenes get quite gory. If Caleb Kane and Cardellini's words and warnings are any indication, plenty of action and horror elements are expected in the series.
