While the tradition of streaming movies has been dominating, the passion for theatrical releases has not faded in the slightest. Bugonia and Sinners are among the films that made their rounds in theaters before arriving on streaming platforms. The latest to hit theaters for a groundbreaking experience is the brilliant masterpiece Crime 101, starring Chris Hemsworth.

Surprisingly, the movie could have been made entirely for streaming platforms, much like The Rip. However, it was director Bart Layton and the cast who chose to take a risk.

In a recent interview with Discussing Film, the director of Crime 101, Bart Layton, shared that the movie could have been made for streaming platforms. However, Layton himself, along with the cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, and Mark Ruffalo, wanted it to move forward with a theatrical release. Moreover, Layton was confident in the film’s genre and its ability to make an impact in theaters.

“We were all very focused on making a movie for the theater. I feel like we haven’t had these kinds of grown up thrillers for a while,” Layton said. And perhaps, he was not wrong. 

Released on February 13, the movie made $16 million in the United States and Canada, and more earnings in different places pushed its worldwide gross to $28 million. And once the film completes its theatrical run, it will make its way to streaming platforms. Since Amazon MGM Studios is one of the producers of the project, the movie is expected to arrive on Prime Video for those who missed its theatrical release.

As for the film’s premise and cinematography, it has been massively praised by critics. It has also achieved a surprising and rare feat on Rotten Tomatoes.

Bart Layton, famous for his work with American Animals, successfully brought this brilliant crime story to life. And his work, paired with an equally impressive performance by the cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Halle Berry, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Nick Nolte, was appreciated by critics, receiving a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. 

Inspired by Don Winslow’s novella, the movie follows the story of a jewel thief, Mike Davis, played by Hemsworth, teaming up with an insurance broker for a heist. Meanwhile, he has to deal with detective Lou Lubesnick, played by Ruffalo. With its intriguing story and impressive cinematography, the film is likely to gain even more traction once it arrives on streaming platforms.
