James Gunn’s new DC universe is finally expanding with several exciting projects. His first venture was the popular animated series Creature Commandos, followed by the live-action movie Superman, which made a big splash. While Supergirl is set to arrive in June, a third film that takes a darker turn, Clayface, could be released later this year. And next year, Creature Commandos could return with a second season.

Although a release date has yet to be confirmed for the animated series, the showrunner recently shared an intriguing update on the show’s progress.

The animated series, Creature Commandos, arrived in December 2024, and since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next season. Recently, showrunner Dean Lorey took to Instagram to share that the animated series has made great progress in both its scripts and animation. He also assured fans that the animation as well as the voice cast of the show, looks quite impressive.

“The scripts are nearly complete and we're making good progress on the animatics. The art looks incredible and the voice cast is amazing,” he said.

While this update has understandably brought much-needed relief to the Creature Commandos fandom, speculation about the new season has been running wild on social media. One such theory is whether Clayface could appear in Season 2. This is especially because he briefly featured in the first episode of Season 1.

In James Gunn’s DC universe, such crossovers are entirely possible. Supergirl, played by Milly Alcock, made an appearance in Superman. Moreover, with a Clayface movie set to release this year, the chances of his return in Creature Commandos remain a hot topic.

This speculation has only picked more steam than ever after the release of the film’s eerie new trailer.

Trailer shows a terrifying glimpse of Clayface

A trailer for Clayface was recently revealed, and the terrifying image of the Batman villain and his face covered in bandages has instantly caught people’s attention. Making a sharp shift from the tone of Supergirl and Superman, the third film will explore Clayface’s origin story. It will explore his disfigurement, pain, struggles, and eventual rise as a villain.

Rather than leaning into heroism, the film embraces a much darker tone and leans heavily towards horror. It was previously expected to be released on September 11, 2026. However, the release date has now been pushed to October 23, 2026, in theaters. Now, this is perhaps a fitting slot, arriving just in time for Halloween.
