DC Studios is finding new ways to make its supernatural corner of the comic book universe feel dangerous again, and Clayface has given audiences another reason to pay attention. With the horror-inspired DC film crossing the $90 million mark worldwide, the studio appears ready to explore another character who operates where the ordinary world meets the occult. This time, the spotlight is turning toward John Constantine, the chain-smoking supernatural detective whose problems rarely end with a simple exorcism.

If Clayface has opened the door to a darker side of DC, Constantine could take audiences considerably further into the underworld. His next cinematic chapter is beginning to take shape, although there is still a long road between a screenplay and a finished film.

Francis Galluppi is bringing a new Hellblazer story to DC

According to an exclusive report by Deadline, DC Studios has tapped Francis Galluppi to write a new John Constantine movie. The project is in very early development, and no other creative attachments have been reported so far. Galluppi is best known for directing the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, while his upcoming Evil Dead: Wrath marks his entry into major studio filmmaking.

As per Deadline, the seventh installment in the horror franchise is expected to arrive in theaters in April 2028. The choice of Galluppi is particularly interesting because Constantine requires a different kind of horror storytelling. Created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben, he first appeared in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 in 1985. Known as Hellblazer, Constantine is a working-class British occult detective who relies on magic, manipulation, street smarts, and a healthy dose of questionable morality.

Those ingredients could translate particularly well to Constantine's world, where a seemingly ordinary investigation can quickly become a bargain with something far more sinister.

What does this mean for Keanu Reeves and Constantine 2?

There is, however, one rather large question hanging over this announcement: what happens to Keanu Reeves? The actor famously portrayed Constantine in Francis Lawrence's 2005 film, which developed a devoted following despite taking considerable liberties with the source material. Reeves has repeatedly expressed interest in returning, and a sequel featuring Lawrence and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has been discussed for years.

James Gunn also previously confirmed that he had discussed the possibility of Constantine 2 with Reeves, although he had not read a screenplay at the time of his October 2025 update. Galluppi's new assignment does not establish whether this project will continue that version of the character or introduce a fresh interpretation. It also remains unclear whether the film will belong to the main DC Universe or exist under its separate Elseworlds banner.

For now, Constantine's return is an intriguing development rather than a confirmed production announcement. Still, with Clayface demonstrating DC's willingness to venture beyond conventional superhero storytelling, another supernatural feature could be an exciting addition to the studio's evolving slate.
