Colman Domingo shared his thoughts in the Rotten Tomatoes interview; he explained his deep psychological preparation for the role. He mentioned that he had to examine the interior life of Joe Jackson to understand the specific ways he moved through the world. The actor looked at his own stepfather to find parallels with hard-working men from a very different, blue-collar generation.

“I think, you know, Joe is from a very different generation as well and I understood that by even examining my own stepfather”, the actor said.

The performer argued that for men of that era, showing love meant setting incredibly high bars for their children to achieve. He wanted to move past the public opinion that often shrouds Joe Jackson in controversy to find the artist underneath. By speaking with family members like Jaafar Jackson, he gathered a composite of the man as a grandfather who could also make people laugh.

“I thought my job as an artist is to bring out the humanity in Joe, which I do know, and really it was beautiful to have conversations with Antoine and with Jafar as well, especially to know, like, you know, how was he as a grandpa?”, Colman Domingo said.

Domingo believes that his job as an artist is to provide a bridge between historical facts and human emotion. This approach ensures that the performance remains grounded in reality rather than falling into the traps of a simple caricature.

A demanding physical shift by Colman Domingo

According to WBLS, the physical transformation for this latest role demanded unusual patience and discipline from Colman Domingo. He revealed that the daily makeup process stretched close to three hours and was never something the crew could rush.

“It was not something you rushed,” Domingo said.

Mentally settling into the character was necessary while the prosthetic team worked with historic photos and old family footage to adjust his facial structure. Once he sat in the makeup chair, the actor avoided all distractions and treated the long process as a silent ritual.

“When you look in the mirror and don’t see yourself, something shifts,” he said.
