The D23 gave fans a taste of what Disney plans for the future with all sorts of title announcements, development updates, and panel discussions. Surrounded by all the euphoria of the fan convention, a particular Disney IP made an unexpected comeback. A Pixar title so beloved and so celebrated that it even got an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. We are talking about Coco, a film that took the beautiful Mexican culture and its intimate traditions to the global stage. 

As Pixar announced Coco 2, it also revealed the official synopsis of the movie, which has fans thrilled about the animated film.

A while back, it was revealed at a shareholder meeting that Disney and Pixar are working on Coco 2, a follow-up to the popular 2017 movie Coco. Since then, everyone has been waiting anxiously for updates on the film, and at D23's Entertainment Showcase, they finally got the basic storyline of the movie. 

The plot will once again follow Miguel, who is now a teenager. The time jump allows the character to explore a completely different period of his life, yet he will still be attached to music and his guitar. After everything that transpired in the first film, he has matured and is no longer the young man attempting to learn the truth about his family.

Additionally, one of the main conflicts from the first film will still be there in the sequel. Benjamin Bratt will reprise his role as Ernesto de la Cruz, who will now be motivated by a desire for retribution against Miguel. Dante will return to accompany Miguel, and he will reunite with significant individuals from his journey,. Their presence will contribute to the preservation of one of the aspects that made Coco so unique: the way the film explores memory, family, and legacy through the link between the living and the dead.

Besides the plot, there are some more details available on the upcoming sequel.

Co-directors Unkrich and Adrian Molina have been confirmed to helm Coco 2. Aside from Benjamin Bratt (Andor), who will reprise his role as Ernesto de la Cruz, Coco's unexpected antagonist, there is not yet any other casting information. Disney also released concept art from the movie that showed Miguel as a teenager with his devoted dog, Dante. 

Miguel's voice actor has not yet been revealed, but we hope Anthony Gonzalez will play the role again. Amidst several high-profile reveals at D23, Disney also revealed that the sequel will be released in November 2029. There is enormous pressure on the movie to deliver, considering its predecessor’s commercial and critical success.
