CNN is producing a documentary special about Stephen Colbert that examines his legacy and the fallout from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert cancellation. The hour-long FlashDoc, The Last Laugh: Stephen Colbert, will stream on CNN’s platforms and air on television in mid-May, right before the show goes off air. It primary aim will be to explore what the late-night landscape loses when one of its sharpest satirists steps away.

The project positions Colbert’s exit as both a personal turning point and a broader cultural shift.

The Last Laugh: Stephen Colbert presents Stephen Colbert as a defining voice whose mix of comedy and political commentary shaped the nightly discourse for more than a decade. It brings together journalists, comedians, and longtime collaborators of Colbert to examine both his public influence and the circumstances surrounding his final days on air, along with the politically laden trysts that had arrived.

Rather than a simple retrospective, the documentary looks at the cultural and corporate pressures that intersected with his on-air work. Produced by CNN Studios as a FlashDoc, this documentary continues the network’s push into short-form, topical storytelling that doubles as a snapshot of current media dynamics. Its release date of May 17, placed just ahead of the final episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, positions it to influence immediate debate about satire, network oversight, and the future of outspoken hosts.

The result aims to function as both a reflection and a critique of a shifting television landscape.

This shift in Colbert’s career, however, is already opening unexpected creative doors beyond late night.

From Late Night to Middle Earth storytelling

Stephen Colbert’s transition from late-night host to creative collaborator has taken shape through a new The Lord of the Rings project developed with Peter Jackson’s team. The film, currently titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, draws from early The Fellowship of the Ring material to build a fresh narrative within Middle-earth. Working alongside Philippa Boyens and co-writer Peter McGee, Colbert has helped shape a story that expands character arcs rather than repeating familiar beats.

The narrative reportedly connects early journey moments to later consequences, bringing supporting figures and generational threads into focus.

With Jackson producing and Boyens guiding the script, the project reflects a careful balance between legacy and innovation. It remains in development, but its ambition lies in combining Tolkien fidelity with new character-driven exploration that could redefine how Middle-earth stories are told on screen. All of this is an assurance, if not a gift, to the host's avid watchers of the fact that, despite bidding the late-night scene a final goodnight decorated with a CNN FlashDoc, Colbert is still fit enough to venture to Middle-earth.
