DC Studios, newly revitalized under James Gunn, made a splash with Superman last year. While its second installment, Supergirl, made somewhat of a mark following its release in June, the studio’s third venture is already garnering traction for the right reasons. Interestingly, the studio steers away from the famous and favorite picks and lands on Clayface.

The third film, Clayface, focuses on an unsettling and psychological terrain, chronicling the torment, transformation, and eventual rise of a Batman villain through a new lens. And if the first glimpse is anything to go by, the film is anchored by a powerhouse cast worth exploring.

Apart from the cast, the movie hinges on a haunting story pulled from the DC comics. Clayface is one of the Batman villains introduced back in 1940. He has previously appeared in several live-action and animated Batman adaptations, including the 2010s Fox series Gotham

While Clayface is no stranger to comic readers or the Batman fandom, James Gunn’s new take on the character in the movie promises a more unsettling interpretation.

What is the new horror movie Clayface about?

The new movie, Clayface, will explore a version of the Gotham villain’s origin story. There have been a few characters to take up the mantle in DC Comics, but the upcoming DC Studios film focuses on Matt Hagen, who is transformed by a mysterious substance and gains the ability to change his appearance, regenerate, and create weapons out of his body. The procedure transforms him into a terrifying, shape-shifting entity made of clay, capable of taking the shape of anyone. He can mimic a voice, and even the limbs appear the same.

It is also worth noting that behind the monstrous powers lies an emotional story of identity, loss, and redemption. These combined, make Clayface one of the more psychologically complex and compelling Batman foes, one that is layered beneath all the disfiguration in the 2026 retelling.

The storytelling approach takes a darker, more character-driven turn, focusing on the character’s internal struggles and identity crisis. Written by Mike Flanagan and directed by James Watkins, the film was previously expected to be released on September 11, 2026. However, as per the latest Warner Bros. schedule, Clayface will now be released on October 23, 2026.

The first glimpse of the terrifying tale of Clayface was shown earlier this year at the CinemaCon event. With Clayface, DC Studios seems to be leaning into a bold and unsettling interpretation of a classic villain. If it can meet expectations, this could herald a brilliant transformation from the studio.
