Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is a film adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic, which tells the story of Odysseus’s perilous journey home after the Trojan War. Matt Damon is a legendary hero, with an ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. The film marks Nolan’s 13th feature as a director and his first movie shot entirely with IMAX cameras, promising an especially immersive experience when it hits cinemas.
With Nolan’s epic already drawing global attention, its massive China rollout is adding another layer of excitement ahead of the film’s theatrical debut.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will be released in a major theatrical rollout across mainland China, opening on over 20,000 screens, including some 90% of the country’s nearly 800 IMAX venues. The Universal title has already generated strong interest ahead of its wider August 14 release. As of August 12, presales hit RMB39.5 million ($5.9 million), while combined preview and presale earnings climbed to RMB91 million ($13.5 million), indicating a strong opening, said ticketing agency Maoyan on Tuesday, as per Variety.

Maoyan Pro is projecting an opening day gross of RMB70.4 million ($10.4 million) for The Odyssey. The film will keep its planned IMAX allocation and no reduction is expected. Nolan also traveled to China with producer Emma Thomas and stars Matt Damon and Charlize Theron for a promotional tour. Ahead of the film’s release, the group took part in interviews, and creator meetings, garnering a lot of attention.
Thomas, Damon, Nolan and Theron also attended The Odyssey’s China premiere on July 30 at the China National Film Museum. The event included an IMAX GT-certified screening, a photocall with around 500 fans and media reps, and a moderated Q&A for press and VIP guests. As per the Variety report, within two hours, hashtags like #TheOdysseyMovie and #TheOdysseyChinaPremiere were trending on Weibo. The cast also took part in a press and creator event that reached an estimated 1 billion people.
The film’s growing momentum has been matched by an impressive box office run, with The Odyssey already crossing the billion-dollar mark worldwide.
The Odyssey crosses $1.12 billion worldwide at the box office
International markets have accounted for the bulk of the film's box office gross, which has been a robust $1.12 billion globally. The movie has raked in $649.91 million overseas, making up 57.9% of its overall gross. It has grossed $472.16 million domestically, equivalent to 42.1% of its worldwide gross. The film has also gone on to make a significant impact in both domestic and overseas markets, crossing the billion-dollar mark and cementing its status as a major global box office hit.

The Odyssey is already generating a lot of buzz ahead of its wide opening with a big China release, strong presales, and a big IMAX footprint. Nolan’s promotional tour has further fueled interest, and the film's scale and star-studded cast make it one of the year’s major theatrical events.
