When Odysseus lashed himself to the mast to survive the Sirens' song, he trusted that endurance would carry him farther than temptation ever could. Christopher Nolan seems to have borrowed that same philosophy for The Odyssey, a film that has spent months building anticipation through its all-star cast, groundbreaking IMAX production, and ambitious adaptation of Homer's timeless epic. Now, with audiences finally stepping aboard, the voyage is already looking historic.

Before the weekend has even reached its destination, the film is exceeding nearly every industry expectation. Early numbers suggest that Nolan's latest mythological spectacle is not simply winning over critics and cinephiles. It is positioning itself as one of the defining theatrical events of 2026.

Just as Homer imagined Odysseus conquering impossible seas one challenge at a time, The Odyssey is navigating the modern box office with remarkable momentum. According to reports, Universal Pictures collected an impressive $17.6 million from Thursday previews across 3,900 North American theaters. Those figures have pushed projections to over $50 million for Friday and an estimated $117 million domestic opening weekend, comfortably above earlier forecasts that ranged from the mid $80 million mark to just over $100 million, as per Variety.

If those estimates hold, The Odyssey will secure the biggest live action opening of 2026, the year's highest R-rated debut, and Universal Pictures' largest opening weekend ever for an R-rated release. Globally, the film is expected to sail toward a $200 million launch despite carrying a substantial $250 million production budget. Variety also notes that in doing so, it will outpace Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic that opened with approximately $95 million domestically, giving Nolan another significant milestone before the film had completed its first weekend in theaters.

Every legendary voyage is measured against the ones that came before it. For Christopher Nolan, the next milestone is not merely conquering this weekend but challenging the towering opening weekends that have defined his career.

From Gotham to Greece: Christopher Nolan edges closer to another career landmark

While The Odyssey is rewriting Chris Nolan's own opening weekend record, one summit still remains above Mount Olympus. His largest domestic debut continues to be The Dark Knight Rises, which opened to $160 million in 2012 before eventually crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide. His previous release, Oppenheimer, launched with $82.4 million domestically before earning $975 million globally and winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Nolan's first Oscar for Best Director. This latest achievement feels different because the attraction extends beyond star power.

The Odyssey is the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, making premium large format screenings one of the hottest tickets in cinemas. With only 25 theaters in the United States capable of projecting IMAX 70mm film, demand has remained exceptionally high among devoted moviegoers. Critics have matched that enthusiasm, awarding the film a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score, the highest of Nolan's career, surpassing even The Dark Knight, Memento, and Oppenheimer

For a filmmaker who has consistently treated cinema as an event, adapting Homer's enduring tale appears to have become another defining chapter. Whether The Odyssey ultimately reaches the towering heights of Nolan's biggest commercial successes remains to be seen.
