IMAX has consistently managed to increase its footprint in premium large-format theaters, driven by consistent box office revenues around the globe and growing demand for immersive theatrical experiences. One of IMAX's most recent releases is The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan. This film is the result of Nolan's longtime cooperation with IMAX and is the first-ever feature film to be made completely using IMAX cameras.

The company's strong quarter was only part of the story, with Nolan's The Odyssey emerging as the centerpiece of IMAX's future growth. 

IMAX had a strong second quarter, with revenue rising 12% to $102.8 million and net income increasing 30% to $15.9 million. CEO Rich Gelfond, however, said that Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is expected to become an even bigger catalyst for the company. Gelfond pointed to the film's record-breaking debut, more than $60 million in advance ticket sales, and its distinction as the first feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras. 

“The Odyssey is a transformational event for IMAX as well as the purest and most complete expression yet of the power of our global platform,” Gelfond said in a press release, admitting that it is more than just a successful movie for IMAX.

Apart from its earnings, during the same press release, IMAX also reported that The Odyssey performed exceptionally well at the theater box offices. This movie was the first of its kind to be completely filmed with IMAX cameras, and during its debut week at the box offices, it grossed about $52 million in IMAX theaters alone, making up 20% of its overall box office earnings. IMAX also reported that the advance ticket sales for upcoming shows had surpassed $60 million.

Gelfond went further to state that the performance of The Odyssey was not just financially beneficial but could have implications on the entire organization going forward. He said that the blockbuster could shape IMAX's future in ways that extend beyond box office success. Gelfond added that its success could influence not only filmmakers embracing the format but also theaters investing in premium large-format experiences.

In almost two decades, Christopher Nolan’s relationship with IMAX has grown from just a couple of sequences in The Dark Knight (2008) to expanded use in The Dark Knight Rises, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. Each film pushed the boundaries of large-format filmmaking, and the end result is The Odyssey, the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The progression speaks about Nolan’s long-standing dedication to the format and his role in driving IMAX as a premium cinematic experience.
