It is not a secret that Christopher Nolan pushes his actors to the edge of their wits in order to get the best out of them, but to force the cast of The Odyssey into vomiting at sea is a new feat altogether. The lengths Christopher Nolan will go to in order to extract some of the most authentic movie sequences in the film business are second to none. His incessant emphasis on relying on natural locations and consciousness instead of a green screen is what makes his movies such a mesmerizing experience on the big screen.

He, however, took his enthusiasm for realism to a maddening level at the sets of his upcomingrelease, The Odyssey, based on Homer’s epic.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Christopher Nolan talked about a peculiar incident from the sets of his upcoming movie The Odyssey. The whole experience was more like an ordeal for the cast and crew, but Nolan somehow made the most of it. He recalled that while filming a scene at sea on a 115ft wooden longship from Norway, the weather got a little out of hand.

The crew was suddenly being tossed around edge to edge on the vessel, which forced some of the actors to vomit their guts out. However, Nolan remained unfazed and instead was thinking about capturing the whole mayhem on camera. He asked for permission from the cast, and they gladly gave it.

“And credit to them. They said, ‘Absolutely, bring it on’. They were really game for it. And that day ended up being fabulous as well as miserable; it yielded some of my favorite shots in the film,” Nolan said.

While this sounds wild and somewhat reckless, it is not like Nolan was taking a chance on his crew’s life, as The Telegraph interview mentions. He perfectly knew that they were safe as the vessel they were on was made for stormy conditions like that. Nolan was therefore reassured that the experience would be completely safe, even if it was obvious it would be emptying his actors of their breakfast from the morning.

Further in the conversation, Nolan detailed his aversion to smartphones and why he avoids having one.

Christopher Nolan’s smartphone problem

Since he is afraid of developing a terrible addiction to smartphones, Christopher Nolan does not possess one. The Oscar-winning filmmaker clearly attributes his lack of a smartphone to his understanding of his own behavior. He is fully aware of how quickly, given the opportunity, distractions could take up his working hours.

"Partly because I know I'd become horribly addicted to them if I had one," Nolan explained, speaking to The Telegraph.

He goes on to say that not having a smartphone also means he's never tempted to go online to refute rumors, argue with detractors, or address news, like the strange rumor that surfaced last year that his upcoming movie will be a remake of the 1983 helicopter action picture Blue Thunder. However, The Odyssey is an adaptation of Homer's epic that comes to the theaters on July 17, 2026.
