Christopher Nolan calls out modern film criticism, saying spotting storytelling tricks does not make a movie any less powerful. Modern movie criticism has increasingly drifted into discourse detached from the actual content of films, focusing more on pre-release expectations than on-screen storytelling.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey faced similar vitriol before its release, with debates over casting, dialogue, and historical accuracy overshadowing the film itself.

Yet now, Nolan has finally answered back.

In an interview with political philosophy lecturer Zhong Shu, posted on the Chinese platform Bilibili, Christopher Nolan addressed what he sees as a “real problem in criticism today.” He argued that many viewers mistakenly believe that identifying a storytelling mechanism invalidates its effectiveness.

“The criticism that’s often leveled at movies in general is, ‘Oh the character has to be made sympathetic, so the character is manipulated in different ways or changed in different ways.’ And that’s a fundamental flaw of film criticism in a way,” Nolan said.

Nolan went on to explain that storytelling relies on a shared cinematic language developed over a century of Hollywood filmmaking. As reported by TheWrap, he noted that this “lingua franca” allows filmmakers to connect with audiences through familiar conventions, even as they bend or break them.

“People have this idea that, ‘Because I can understand why the story affects me the way it is, therefore, it didn’t work.’ That’s not how storytelling works,” he said in the interview posted by BILIBILI. 

The director clarified that his critique was aimed more at amateur criticism than professional analysis, which tends to recognize the necessity of these mechanisms. He acknowledged that while tropes can become too familiar and require evolution, filmmakers must still work within the common language audiences understand.

And if Nolan’s words defend the film’s artistry, its numbers tell an even louder story.

Globally, it sits near $640 million, still behind Oppenheimer’s eventual $975 million, but the domestic handover signals a symbolic shift. As Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes over theaters, Nolan’s epic has already cemented its place as one of the most powerful box office forces in recent memory.
