Christopher Nolan eyes his darkest chapter yet, hinting his next cinematic obsession could plunge straight into full-blown horror. For years, Christopher Nolan has built a filmography defined by tension, scale, and psychological intensity, often brushing against the edges of horror without fully stepping into the genre.

From the dread-soaked atmosphere of The Dark Knight to the existential unease of Interstellar, his work has always understood how to unsettle. That instinct makes the idea of a full horror film especially compelling.

And now he has confirmed he wants to make one.

Horror Remains on Christopher Nolan’s Wish List

Christopher Nolan says a horror film is still on his wish list, but only if the idea is strong enough to justify it. In a recent interview while promoting The Odyssey, he also made clear that he already sees horror DNA running through some of his most famous work, especially Oppenheimer and the new film he’s finishing now.

“I'd love to do a horror movie but it's all about the idea. That's all about. Is there a story that really compels you?” Nolan said while speaking to Fred Asquith.

He added that he has not yet found the right story for himself, even though he has admired how other filmmakers use the genre to create an immediate physical reaction in the audience.

“I mean there's a sense in which Oppenheimer's a horror movie it's. It was very dark material to engage with for that long and there are very significant elements of horror baked into The Odyssey,” Nolan said in the same conversation with Fred Asquith on The Odyssey promotional circuit.

For now, Nolan appears content to keep stretching horror-adjacent ideas inside larger projects rather than forcing himself into a pure genre movie. But his comments leave the door wide open, and the message is simple: when the right idea comes along, he would absolutely be ready to make the leap.

That same instinct for scale and emotion is already drawing major attention to his latest film.

Early reactions to The Odyssey signal another major win

Early reactions to The Odyssey are overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with many critics treating it as one of the year’s major cinematic events. The film’s London premiere quickly set off a wave of praise, and the early consensus is that Nolan has delivered something huge in scope, technically ambitious, and far more emotionally involving than a simple prestige epic.

Several viewers are calling it a serious awards contender, especially in the top categories. Matt Damon’s performance is drawing strong attention, with some critics suggesting he could enter the Oscar conversation, while Robert Pattinson is being singled out for stealing scenes as the film’s scheming antagonist.

What stands out most in the first wave of reactions is how many people are talking about scale. Reviewers describe the production as massive but controlled, with the kind of visual sweep Nolan is known for pushed even further here. The film’s use of IMAX is being praised as more than a technical flourish; it seems to have become part of the movie’s identity.
