Christopher Nolan has sent astronauts to the farthest reaches of space, toyed with dreams within dreams, and presented one of the darkest versions of the Joker ever put on screen. Over the years, the director has taken on unbelievable stories and brought them to life. But even one of Hollywood's greatest filmmakers has one thing that he cannot do. 

There is one genre that he believes is far tougher to pull off than it looks. While he might be exceptional at making mind-bending or larger-than-life movies such as Interstellar or Inception, the romantic comedy genre intimidates him.

Christopher Nolan recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and spoke about his films and career. While speaking of experimenting with different genres, Nolan admitted that he would be terrified to make a jump in genre and do a romantic comedy. He believes that making people laugh is one of the hardest things in this profession. 

“I think people who direct comedy, people who do comedy, I think that’s one of the hardest things in the world to make people laugh that way,” he said. 

Like any moviegoer, the director added that he enjoys a good romantic comedy. But as a filmmaker, he understands that comedy is far more complex than it appears. He explained that taking on a comedy is especially daunting because it is a huge risk if a joke does not land.

“There’s no hiding behind that when you do comedy. So, I would be terrified of doing anything like that,” he added.

Romantic comedies may be off the table for The Odyssey director, but Nolan has expressed interest in dipping his toes into the horror genre.

Christopher Nolan's fans have long hoped to see the acclaimed filmmaker take on a full-fledged horror movie. Interestingly, Nolan has suggested that The Odyssey already incorporates some horror elements. Even so, he admitted there is much more he would like to explore within the genre. As with all of his films, Nolan added that finding the right story is the key.

"I've always believed that horror as a genre has to be approached very carefully from a conceptual point of view," Nolan told The Hollywood Reporter. "In other words, you have to have an amazing idea."

The director also praised the recent horror film Obsession, applauding its concept and storytelling. He explained that a horror film's impact comes from its story rather than its visual scares alone. While a horror project is not officially on his slate, his comments suggest the genre is far from off-limits. For now, it remains to be seen if, and when, the Oscar-winning filmmaker finally brings his vision of a horror movie to the big screen.
