Christian Bale once received a threat warning him not to enter an alley because of his role in American Psycho, then went anyway and found the mock confrontation anticlimactic at best. Considering the outrage surrounding Bret Easton Ellis's novel and the 2000 film, including censorship efforts, boycotts, and protests, the threat was hardly the strangest reaction. Bale, however, met menace with the weary disappointment of a man denied a proper story.

What makes the story deliciously intriguing is not the threat itself, but Bale treating it less like danger and more like an appointment he was stood up for. 

During a GQ interview, Christian Bale revisited the time American Psycho apparently turned his neighborhood stroll into a low-budget thriller. Someone warned him that a person knew exactly where he walked, lurked near an alley, and planned to rip out his cerebral cortex. Christian Bale responded with the calm curiosity of a man who had been handed a rather intriguing itinerary.

"So of course I was like, I'm going to that alley," Christian Bale recalled, because apparently a threat was not enough to ruin his afternoon. He went down the alley expecting, one imagines, at least a little narrative payoff. Instead, "unfortunately, nothing" happened, leaving the actor to wander back and forth like a disappointed customer awaiting a villain.

The actor eventually kept checking the alley, wondering where his would-be attacker had gone and why the promised spectacle was running late. The memory returned when GQ showed Christian Bale the infamous scene from the 2000 film, where Patrick Bateman goes after a homeless man after blaming his circumstances on a supposedly negative attitude.

For all the threats, debate, and internet outrage that once surrounded American Psycho, Christian Bale now looks back on his Patrick Bateman era with remarkably fond memories. Bale has made it clear that he has no affection for Bateman himself, whose monstrous personality remains thoroughly repellent. The role, however, is another story entirely.

Christian Bale has spoken warmly about making the 2000 film with director Mary Harron and remains open to another actor taking a try at the material.
