Oscar-winner Christian Bale spent six hours in the makeup chair for his role as Frankenstein's monster in Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! because the makeup team needed ample time to apply prosthetics, hair and wardrobe until they achieved his supernatural appearance. The actor developed his unique coping mechanism due to distress from his restricted movement.
Bale told Entertainment Weekly that he needed to maintain deep silence to control his emotions because he spent hours in one position without moving. He wanted to scream before filming, but he preferred to do it in a group rather than alone while driving to work because he thought it would result in an accident or people mistaking him for someone who had lost their mind.
"I would scream like crazy every day. Just to [release the] despair, all of that restraint that you have to display when you’re sitting still for that long. I didn’t want to do it driving into work because I thought I might cause a crash. And I didn’t want to do it by myself because I thought everyone would just think I’m going nuts,” Bale told the outlet.
What began as Bale's private venting method quickly turned into a full-blown ritual. Crew members heard the day-to-day primal howls and gradually joined in. The shooting finished with about 30 crew members involved because they used the ritual to release tension from their extended work periods and their emotional burden during intense filming sessions. Bale laughed, deeming the experience a Bride’s revolution on set, per the outlet.
For Bale, screaming returned his mental stability as it felt like a psychological outlet, as his monster's exterior received painstaking detail, but he had to maintain his human spirit, not to let it get buried under the prosthetics. The Bride! movie, however, is much more than one transformative performance in all its eerie, emotional glory.
