Chris Pratt has spent years saving galaxies and outrunning dinosaurs. Now, his next screen adventure heads somewhere considerably older, and holier. The actor teams up with Pope Leo XIV in the trailer for Pétros Ení — Discovering the Origins, a documentary about St. Peter’s tomb beneath the Vatican.

Pratt’s latest role trades saving the world for exploring one of Christianity’s most important sites, with a guide few Hollywood productions could put on the call sheet.

Chris Pratt's upcoming project guides viewers beneath St. Peter’s Basilica, into the Vatican Necropolis and toward the burial place traditionally identified as the apostle Peter’s tomb, an exclusive from Variety has revealed. Pope Leo appears in the closing scenes to reflect on Peter and the tomb’s significance. Pratt called the collaboration “an incredible honor,” adding that “the story of St. Peter is foundational to the Christian faith.”

"The story of St. Peter is foundational to the Christian faith, and I am deeply grateful for the trust and access I was given to bring his legacy to the screen," the actor said.

For Pratt, whose screen persona has often leaned on wisecracks, action like another season of The Terminal List and larger-than-life spectacle, the documentary offers a different kind of leading role. His work in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise made him a familiar face in blockbuster cinema, while The Super Mario Bros. Movie extended that reach into animation.

A Vatican-backed exploration of Christian history revealed by Variety puts a different dimension of his public image in focus, though whether it signals a broader shift in his projects remains to be seen.

The pairing is striking, but the story reaches back through centuries of devotion and excavation, connecting a hidden burial place to Christianity’s earliest history.

Inside the story behind St. Peter’s tomb

Titled Pétros Ení — Discovering the Origins, the film marks the 400th anniversary of St. Peter’s Basilica’s consecration on November 18, 2026. Its Greek title refers to an inscription interpreted as “Peter is here,” found near the apostle’s burial area.

The documentary traces how Peter’s burial place became a center of early Christian devotion and how Emperor Constantine incorporated it into the first great basilica. It will receive a special preview at the Rome Film Festival on October 16, ahead of an international theatrical rollout planned for February 2027, during Lent.

For Chris Pratt, this is a detour from Hollywood’s familiar universes. The story leads beneath the Vatican, toward a tomb whose history continues to shape the faith built around it.
