While the Avengers are united by a matching tattoo honoring their time together in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one member of the original team never got one. The actors who played Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have shared a wholesome friendship over the years and often create special memories together that go beyond their time in the franchise. One of those memories is a matching tattoo shared by five of the original Avengers actors. 

As both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have revealed, the idea for the tattoo came from one of their fellow Avengers actor. While five of them ultimately got the matching ink, it seems they could not convince Mr. Green to join them.

Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, and Chris Hemsworth have matching tattoos honoring their time together in the MCU and their work on Avengers: Infinity War. Evans revealed that the idea was originally Johansson's. However, the group could not convince Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo to get the matching tattoo.

"We couldn’t get Ruffalo,” he said at the Fan Expo panel in Boston held on August 9. 

While Evans may still be sour about Mark Ruffalo not getting the tattoo as per his statement on the Fan Expo panel, Ruffalo seems to have a reason for not getting one. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the actor revealed that he is afraid of needles. He further joked that he was also being rebellious by refusing to get the tattoo, which is fitting for the character he plays in the franchise.

“I'm going to be punk rock and not get the tattoo!” he said.

Now, not just Evans, Robert Downey Jr. also previously shared more details about the tattoo in an interview with EW, revealing that there is also a sixth person with the same tattoo. He explained that Johansson and Evans were the first to get the tattoo in New York. They then brought their tattoo artist, Josh Lord, to Los Angeles so the other Avengers could get theirs. And all five actors also had the same tattoo inked on Lord’s hand, making him the unofficial sixth member of the group with the matching tattoo.

“And each one of us drew a line on the artist with his own tattoo gun, and it was a total massacre. Each of us contributed to giving the tattoo artist the sixth tattoo that he designed for us,” he said.

Not just the Avengers actors, but several members of the Marvel franchise have also got tattoos to honor their involvement in the franchise and the movies.

One of the first names on the list is Iron Man’s mentee and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland. In a 2017 interview with BackToTheMovies, Holland revealed that he got a Spider-Man symbol tattooed on the bottom of his foot. Another Marvel actor is Sophie Turner, who reportedly has two tattoos to honor her X-Men film.

She reportedly has an X-Men logo tattooed on the left side of her rib cage, along with a small flame on her finger. Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson has three dots tattooed on her ankle to honor her Marvel debut, as she revealed during an interview with Marie Claire. While Mark Ruffalo may have missed out on this fun tradition, it is a playful way for the Marvel stars to celebrate the films and their memories, even years after their time in the franchise.
