Harry Potter's iconic universe has enchanted generations of viewers with its magic-infused epic odyssey, and now, with a new TV series on the horizon at HBO, new anticipation whirls around Hogwarts and its beloved characters. However, not everyone is smitten by the little-too-familiar reiterations, for instance, the director of the original films, Chris Columbus, who has posed interesting questions about the new series. What promises to be brand new appears to be walking dangerously close to that which existed before.

In the mirror of memory, though a new vision reflects brightly, an old spell seems to have been repeated to achieve the same charm.

Chris Columbus, the visionary filmmaker who breathed cinematic life into Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, recently expressed his criticism and excitement over HBO's remake. Appearing in The Rest Is Entertainment podcast, he questioned the stark similarities between the new show and his movies, case in point, a photo of the TV series's star Nick Frost dressed as Hagrid in a costume almost the same as what was created for Robbie Coltrane in the original movies. Columbus confessed, "Part of me was like: What's the point?" adding that he had hoped for "the costumes and everything... to be different," lamenting how, "It’s all going to be the same."

He, however, immediately made it clear on the podcast that he was not resentful but felt flattered instead, deeming the costume similarities as déjà vu. He insisted that although he is proud of his movies, he is prepared for the new, untouched pages from the original books to appear live on screen. HBO's series, which might contain popular book scenes that were left out of Columbus's films, made the director amply excited for what is to come.
